Compared to the unit I'm using now, the sale that HP has on for a few days has this unit on sale: http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/ho...ENVY-700-215xt-Desktop-PC-with-Windows-7That I7 quad processor is mucho bigger/faster than the dual-core I3 I have in this unit.. Just the basic machine at $680 and free ship would be, I think, just the unit to have on hand when (not if) this one takes a chit... Am I missing anything here?

Picked up an HP desktop form Sam's Club last December and it works fine it came with Win 8.
Looks very similar to the one you are considering. It is lightning fast for sure and the memory is more than enough for my needs.

Anything to avoid getting a new computer with windows 8!!! I swear one of these days I'm going to pump some 00 into one of our home machines that run W-8.

Throw at least 16 GB of memory in it and it will rock.
We have been using their z230 workstations with 8 GB that have been a little sluggish. Once we bump them to 16 GB they run pretty fast.

looks like a decent machine for a decent price. if you can get that free memory bump, i'd do it. unless you are comfortable working on them, i'd see how much one of them bumper-to-bumper warranties is too.
i'm not the biggest fan of the "Staples" grade HP's. they are a lot of times put together with crappy components to keep the price down. that said, i have a Proliant that i run linux on that i've had for about 10 years and it runs like a top.

Anything to avoid getting a new computer with windows 8!!! . I've heard the same thing - that's why this one w/W-7 is attractive. looks like a decent machine for a decent price. if you can get that free memory bump, i'd do it. unless you are comfortable working on them, i'd see how much one of them bumper-to-bumper warranties is too.
Oh, I'm definitely getting the free memory upgrade.. Current machine has 6.. The new one with 12, + the I7 QC ought to move pretty fast.. Oh, and the local ISP is upgrading now to fiber optic cable and will ditch the DSL hookup.. THAT will help a lot too.. Not sure about those extended warranties on PCs, but I'll check it out...

Got systems art work that just got rid of XP. Have systems with Vista, Win 7 and Win 8...no biggy they are all just a bit different.

Why change the OS unless it improves it?
The change from XP to W7 was almost seamless. Moving to W8 offers no benefits that I can see, unless one is interested in raising their BP.

It's a nice system. 12GB RAM is plenty, if you enjoy gaming you might want to upgrade the graphics. For internet browsing... more power than you'll ever need.

I prefer to use a laptop. Those old tower and screen computers were all there was but were noisy with their fan. A 17" laptop takes up much less room and is handy to use how and where I like. Get two of them for back up.

Right. So it should not be auto-installed on ALL laptops, IMO.

I also use an emulator with win8 and it works fine. More RAM is a good idea. If you want it faster in some other regards I'd consider putting a SSD in. I put one in the one I built last winter and my start up time is fast. Like 15 seconds and it's all booted up and ready to go...and I believe I'm only running 8g of RAM.

Yessir, you are. But I guess you're not going to buy a Mac, anyway.

I bought an HP 23" all-in-one a couple of months ago with an AMD A-6 processor & 8G of RAM.
More that fast enough for any lay-person.......MS Office programs load instantly.
Unless you are doing huge amount of digital work or extreme mathematical calculations, or playing some extreme games, you really do not need a faster computer than the A-6 or an I5.
Whatever you are going on the internet is far more limited by your network card & your ISP & the websites you are using at any given time than by your computer processor speed & RAM.
You'll never really challenge that I7 in all likelihood.
