Like to hear from folks who ran/run a 284 in a short action.
I know it shines in a LA like 700/clone or Tikka, but my questions is ltd to SA.
Pros/Cons. Mainly concerned w feeding and COL with bullets to 162s. Action is a Borden Alpine. Assume it is 3 in mag w/284.
What speeds can one get w/284 in 22-23" bbl?

I can tell you .25-284 feeds and ejects w/o any problem at all s long as the ammo fits in the magazine. The action is an unmodified 660 Remington. Have had the rifle about 12 yrs. now. E

I have 284 win with 22" barrel and mag limit of 2.8". Never had any sort of trouble with feeding but I have had some trouble getting near max velocity loads that will also shoot accurately. The rifle is extremely light and mabye thats partially to blame and also the throat is very long so every bullet has a huge jump to the rifling. The best combo so far has been 140 ttsx, the closer to 3000 fps the tighter the groups get (sub moa), but I keep it around 2950 and deal with a little less accuracy. The heaviest bullet I've tried is the 154 sst but the ogive is so long (not sure if thats the right term), that the case mouth doesnt touch the bullet when seated at 2.8", I can run them over 2800 but accuracy for this rifle and that bullet is best at mid 2700's. I may try 160 accubonds if I can ever find any. With high BC bullets and most suitable powders, you will be dealing with compressed loads.

Based on your experience, and the slight diff in performance, which would you build of the three, what box/COL, assume throat to match.

If you have a 3" mag box I don't see any reason to not do the 284, unless you really want the 7mm-08 or it's AI variant. In a less than 3" box, I'd be all over the 7mm-08AI.
I don't have a 284 but do have the other two.

My 7-08AI is too long at 24",but will squirt the 162 at 2850fps............

7-08,7-08AI,ShamWow,284,Whizzum. Cartridge selection,is a function of bullet selection, which should be weighed in overview of receiver selection. Do I get giddy about a 2.8" ShamWow? Nope. Nor do I a 2.8" Whizzum or 284. At 2.8",I'm happy to stay .473" and rock it. If/when talking 3" and .532" I wanna go right to the Whizzum and cut to the chase. Nothing hangs with a Montucky 7 Whizzum................

But, assuming you were building ground up, 473 SA, would you put a 3" 284 or 2.8" 7/08/AI?
Next, if 7/08 would you go 22" - more on AI?

A 7mm SAUM lets you push 168's about as fast as a 7/08 will push 140's. Like Stink is wont to say, "headstamps don't matter". Figure out what you wanna drive first. Me? I ain't formin' nothin'. YMMV.

I have used the 284 win in several rifles over the years. Also read of several owners here.
One issue that pops up is feeding. Some Rem owners have had feeding issues. I built a rem to use the 6mm-284 and installed a Wyatt's mag box. It feeds but not as good as my old tang safety Ruger does with the 284 win.
The Ruger was a 6mm Rem that was rebarreled. It feeds slow or fast with no issues. Many years later I had my gunsmith lengthen the mag box to 3.1". It still feeds as slickly as any rifle I have ever used.
As for velocities with the 284? You can get some bullets to really scream with RL-17. From my 23" barrel with moly: 120s up to 3350 140s up to 3200 150s up to 3150 160s up to 3050
A good alternate powder is H4350
I would suggest if you choose the 284 to get some lapua 6.5-284 and neck them up.

I've only done Remmie based 284Win based rifles, better than a half dozen times(6-284,25-284 and 284)...never an issue in Feed/Function,but I've been knowed to Start At The Start.
Hint...............

In response to the OP, I wouldn't build a 284 win on less than at least a 2.95" box length. A Wyatt's box on a Rem would be ok. Mine is on a Model 70 SA and will handle up to 3.1" COL. The wife shoots a 7-08ai on a Rem 700 SA with a Wyatt's box, but it really would work fine with a standard box. The bullet of choice for her gun is a 120 gr TTSX. Velocity out of her 24" barrel is within 50 fps of what I get out of my 23" 284 win. Both are plenty of gun. Both rock and are my #1 and #2 favorite cartridges period. Not sure which is which right now.

What speeds can one get w/284 in 22-23" bbl? I've had two--one in a ULA (pre-NULA), and one in M700 SA. Neither of them ever failed to feed or jammed, neither one evoked a whole lot of confidence they would fail to feed...or jam. The best way I can describe it is cycling a round from the mag was kind've of "hitchy" feeling. Casey
