Anybody tried one of these out yet? I remember a thread about it a few months ago, wondering how they perform, particularly the 7-08.

They are discount retail at over 2 grand down here. For that sort of brass I would expect very high standards of assembly and finish.
For the reason of pricing there are very few on the ground in these parts.
Sorry that doesn't help you I know.

Yes they do appear in specs to be good'uns. That's why I know what the asking price is here. I can get into a Kimber for a few hundred less so might go that way.

2K? Good Gawd!...............I have been tempted to try one but My guess is that they have that thick wristed B&C stock like the B&C on the Mod 70 EW that I detest, until I can actually handle one (which will probably be never in My neck of the woods) I will have to pass.....................Hb

I understand some don't like the stock ergos. I have B&C on a Tikka and like it fine, so I know what I'm getting into there.

One of my hunting partners has has the Patriot in 30-06. He loves it. I've shot is several times and its is a very nice, well built rifle. He only shoots factory and I've seen groups hovering around one inch at 100 yds when I've shot it.
I wouldn't pay $2000 for one, but for around $1300 I think they are a lot of rifle for the money.

Tikkas are nice, but there are a lot of compromises in their design. Depending on your use, those compromises might not matter. To some others they do.

I'm sure they are a shooting sombeesh and the Tikka statement by dogcatcher is downright ridiculous (not unusual for him). I have a CZ 550 American that can shoot circles around most Tikka's day in and day out. My model 70's keep right up with them as well. I'd say if you want it, go for it. It might just surprise you and then you can let us know just how good they are..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

JG,
if you get one, knock the new off it, and find you don't like it, get in touch with me. I'm a sucker for pre-enjoyed rifles. I only have four 7-08s in house at the moment, and I have had great luck with the Nosler Custom Sporters.
Best,
GWB

The short cartridges on the long action is one of the compromises I spoke about above. So is the small and fiddly ejection/loading port.
Not picking a fight; I agree on the quality of those Tikka barrels but the rest of the rifle is a series of compromises.

Does it really offer a whole lot over a Vanguard S2. A bit of weight and ?? I would own neither so I am agnostic here but curious on the real delta between the two for the delta $$$.

Swap bolt stops, use a long action mag, and you never have worry about running heavies.
JG already has a Tikka 7-08 and he knows how well it shoots.

Because the OP has a Tikka and has raved about its accuracy in the past. Therefore, buying another 7-08 is a gamble.
Starsky, lets go shooting sometime. I will bring a Tikka, you bring whatever...I'm setting my gong at 700 this weekend, should be fun.

Well at $2k+ here for the Patriot vs $600 or less for the Vanguard / Howa I don't the difference is enough. But I don't doubt the Patriot is superior in every way except price. The Patriot looks the sort of rifle to inspire pride of ownership too.

Got an email from nosler today, the magazine length on the 7mm-08 is 2.875". Not much room to stretch out those long Bergers.

Sako, guessing right at 8lbs, maybe slightly less, but that is just a guess. It feeds the 140AB's @ 2.803 very well, action is very slick, it does have a great feel to it overall. I'll put the comparator to some dummy rounds tomorrow, as I like to seat bullets very near the lands, magbox allowing of course.

Got her on paper, then fiddled around with some charges, seating depths, etc. After fiddling around with it for the past few days, it's seemed to settle into this range of charges. The details: 140 accubond 2.800 COAL Nosler brass Big Game Fed 215M primers (experience in other 7-08's with Big Game showed that more often than not, mag primers with this ball powder seemed to tighten things up rather nicely.) Everything functions very smoothly, except for the mullet on the trigger sometimes. Interesting that this particular rifle likes more jump than what I'm used to.

Those don't appear to be the same bolts. The ring around the pin is different in each and if you look at the left pic - at the 3 o'lock there seems to be a dent in the bolt edge that isn't there in the right picture. (would be at 6 o'clock in that one) Ejectors are colored differently as well.

You have them presented as a bolt with an issue on the left and then that same bolt coming back with the issue still present on the right. You're ruining this fine forum with innuendo of mis-repair. I used the picture of the Pooosh feed Nosler bolt to show that it lacks Control Round Feed. CRF is a desirable feature on upscale hunting rifles.
On top of all that it's Howa action! LOL

I used the picture of the Pooosh feed Nosler bolt to show that it lacks Control Round Feed. CRF is a desirable feature on upscale hunting rifles.
On top of all that it's Howa action! LOL You've made no such assertion in the post. Please stop. You're ruining a fine forum for people to discuss firearms and hunting like gentlemen. You simply posted a picture with no explanation, leaving others to assume you meant the rifle in question. It's unbecoming of civilized sportsmen to insinuate such a thing.

From what I discovered, maybe by our own Mule Deer, it is not a Howa action, but it is a Nosler proprietary action designed by the same guy that designed the Howa actions. A close similarity, but not exactly a Howa action copy. Maybe MD will chime in a correct me if/where I'm wrong. I'm really not too worried about it anyway though. Looks like it's gonna shoot.
Savage, in case you missed it, your link is from a thread over 2 yrs old.

It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.

Howa actions have features I prefer to the Rem. 700, and although haven't owned one, I am always looking for the right one.
Howa action or not, I'd be very happy with that rifle!
I have been looking at them too. It looks like a lot of rifle for the money.
It is a fine looking rifle, and looks like it is going to perform well for you.
Congrats!

Hell, what's wrong with a Howa action? I thought they were fine rifles, I know the few Howa rifle's I've been around functioned perfectly and accuracy was fine........................Hb

The rifle lacks CRF and a three position safety that controls the firing pin. Not up to minimum standards.
All guns should be locked up when not in use!

I'm not really a Model 70 fanboy, I've owned several but most were too heavy for My taste and CRF and three position safety's aren't very high on My priority list when I'm picking out a new rifle......................Hb
