I am thinking of getting one built from the ground up for shooting 77smk's or heavier.

1)Please talk me out of it because I have too many chamberings already! HA!

I have always been a little confused about the 22-250 action. Do you do a build on a long action? It is too long for a short action... right?

Does Remington make and sell at Brownells a 22-250 action?

What twist rate? I was reading on other forums that 1/8 is just right. But... a 1/7 works very well in a nato-556 for heavy bullets. Does the higher velocity in the 22-250 make the 1/7 a no go for some reason?

AND............

Do you get the chamber and bore chromed to lengthen throat life? Black nitride these days? Or just shoot it to death? Who does the chrome job these days?

What do y'all used your 22-250 fer?

Favorite loads and war stories... I'd like to hear them.

1. Short action, swap out the magazine box/follower to a standard 2.8" short action.

2. I'm using a 1:8 Rock Creek for 75gn A-max's. The little bugger was pretty impressive in the wind yesterday vs. my 270Win/140TSX load and 2 pard's 300Win/168TTSX loads.

3. I'm running a naked bore, contemplating UBC, haven't decided yet.

4. Coyotes, steel, rocks, and a deer.

5. Mine likes WW760 and Ramshot Hunter for top velocity and accuracy. ~3300fps via 24" bbld.

Mr. White,

Short action and 8" twist.

75gr Gay-Max and RL 15 go together like cocaine and strippers.

I builted mine on a Vanguard. Douglas #3 finished @ 22" I believe. It originally had a floorplate but I saw the Howa conversions in my local shop and figured WTH? Didn't do anything regarding COL, but it sure feeds like a mofo with that single stack setup.

Well, a few answers anyway.

There is no special .22-250 length Rem 700, they use a standard .308 length action. .308 brass is longer than .22-250 brass.

I'd suggest seating one of those 77 grain SMKs as close to the middle of its bearing surface as you can eyeball so that you have the most flexibility to go longer or shorter, then have your gunsmith specify a reamer that causes that OAL to just tap the rifling. This gives the most flexibility in seating depth.

I'd think hard about going with .22-250 AI, not for the velocity increase, but because ye olde .22-250 has a lot of taper and a lot of case stretch. Should save you some trimming.

Twist ... I'd call Sierra and tell them you're waffling on twist. A 1:9 twist will usually stabilize the 75 grain AMAX at .22-250 AI velocity. I would think a 1:8" would be fast enough but ... better to get it from them.

The down side to too much twist can be pressure. Also, some bullet jackets just can't handle the additional stress.

Think hard about how many lands and grooves you want. 3 L&G is popular but when they start to get rough, the jackets on VLDs seem to fail more quickly. Personally I'd look at 5 groove.

I wouldn't chrome it. I think that's a "thing" that was abandoned long ago.

Personally, I'd just shoot it. Don't overheat it. If you're like me, by the time you wear it out, your interest will have moved to something else new and shiny and it'll be time to rebarrel to that instead.

Tom

I rebarreled my 22-250ai 1in 8 to a saami 1in8. Both 23", shot from 40 gr vmax to 75 amax, with 53s, 62s, and 55s to boot with the ai. ai shot all well, thus far saami shoots 62s and 75s with aplomb at same velocity as the ai. Most versatile gun I've ever had. Mine is a Rem 600.

Is that the one you built on the Mohawk?

Mr. White,

Be sure you build a balanced and not too heavy rig as you'll find the 8 twist/22-250 combo is a deer slaying machine with the TSX and TTSX's.

Mine's a 3 with about an inch of shank. It was supposed to be a 2, not sure what happened on that one...

When I re-tube it will be a 2.

I put one on a Ruger Short Action, by taking the 243 barrel off of it..pulled a 223 Pac Nor Barrel with a one in 7 twist off another Ruger I was selling since some one wanted the action real bad...had it rechambered to the 22.250...

Barrel contour was "heavy magnum" so it is the diameter of what usually is a 458 Mag...

playing with a bunch of powders for testing, I found the fastest velocity with the best accuracy for 80 grain A Maxes, and Sierra Match bullets turned out to be IMR 4064 and IMR 4895... RL 15 and AR Comp both get real honorable mentions...

They run 80 grainers at 3350 fps with a 24 inch barrel... and the 75 grainers get boosted to 3400 fps...

bullets are seated to magazine length, which it being originally a 243 is longer than the Ruger 22.250 magazine....

quite a capable little toy, that's for sure..

I am wondering... if I build from scratch if a 308 mag might be the way to go????

Any action built for a .308 based cartridge should be fine.

I had sworn to the wife that I had bought my last rifle...

Been thinking about this thread all night.

Might have to sell something to get the project started.

You're not buying a rifle. You're building a rifle.

Besides, it's for the children:

The 700 MR platform is interesting.

I've kicked around the idea of rebarreling my not-too-accurate Kimber Montana .308 to .22-250, AI, or .22-243. Probably won't since I have a Lilja .308 barrel on hand already but there is some appeal.

You really shouldn't use 308 and 22-250 in the same sentence.

If I ever shot out my .22-250 barrel on the #1, I think I'd go back with a .22-250AI in a 1 in 8". Or possibly a 22 CHeetah, just for S&G

Here is an old thread discussing bolt face and magazine considerations.

Seems like the 308 magazine box is the way to go with the 22-250AI build? Sorry to be redundant. I is slow.

Correct, with a 700 you'd use the .308 magazine, follower, and spring.

I believe with a Ruger there is a different follower but the same mag. Or at least the aftermarket follower for .308 vs .22-250 for single shot use is different.

From the article...

The Tikka M55 sniper rifle is a bolt action repeater made from a one piece machined receiver. The action features a solid bridge, grooved, drilled and tapped for scope mounts. The bolt is one piece and has dual opposed front locking lugs with a bolt handle that serves as a safety lug. The magazine is a detachable, single column three round box type. The single stage trigger is adjustable for weight of pull. Receiver marked TIKKA M55 and the serial number. The barrel is stamped Cal. .22-250 REM, Oy Tikkakoski Ab, Made in Finland and there are British and Finnish proof marks. A Kahles ZF69 6X42 telescopic sight, serial number 198982, is fitted to this rifle. The biathlon style adjustable stock has been made for a left handed marksman and there is coarse stippling to the fore-end and pistol grip. Adjustable aluminium sling swivel rails are inset into the underside and right side of the fore-end.

Summary

This rifle was used by the Australian Special Air Service Regiment when they had the responsibility for urban counter terrorist operations in the 1980s. Marksmen of the regiment were issued with two of these rifles, one like this one for day use and another fitted with a night telescope. A number of these rifles were obtained from the British SAS Regiment who used them for the same purpose as the Australian unit. The choice of the high velocity .22-250 smallbore cartridge was to reduce excessive penetration and eliminate ricochets.

makes a lot of sense...I understand SWAT in LA use to use 243s for the same reason....

Why would you want that French built POS when you could have a 'flave Precision?

Load? Muzzle velocity? Distance to critter when shot? Exit wound description/picture?

Thanks for all the feedback...

Checked on brass availability and price for 22-250. Can only find Laupa on the shelf at $1 per pop. Not a no go but...

Might have to drop back and punt in my head:

Steve Timm post, 10/29/09 Predator-Masters:

"I've been shooting the .223 Ackley for about fifteen years and totally love the round.

It's possible I might have written the first ever article about the round (Varmint Hunter Issue #15, July 1996; VHA Custom Gun Number Eight, Page 56-64).

Frankly, I was so impressed with the super-heavy Rifles Inc rifle that I have three field-weight rifles made and I've enjoyed them ever since. These later rifles were featured in later articles I wrote about the .223 Ackley.

Over the years, I've fired a couple hundred thousand rounds of .223 Ackley and have never seen any shortcomings from the cartridge. Afield or at the bench, the .223 Ackely is a total winner.

I cannot talk about it (sworn to secrecy), but the .223 Ackley came within a hair of becoming a commercial cartridge a few years ago. I've always thought that the company (that will remain nameless) totally screwed up a fabulous commercial opportunity and that a huge number of American shooters would have been enjoying the .223 Ackley today, but for the faint-heartedness of a bean-counting executive.

Anyway, the .223 Ackley is a fabulous cartridge that is capable of greatly-enhanced ballistics over the parent round. The accuracy is uniformly superb and case-trimming is just about eliminated.

One thing I've also noticed about the .223 Ackley Improved is that it seems to be a "better balanced" cartridge than the regular .223 Rem because the extreme spreads (in muzzle velocity) are always much tighter than the regular .223. It's quite common for me to fire twenty rounds of .223 Ackley over my Oelher 35P and have an ES of 15 fps ... that is almost impossible with the .223 Normal.

The .223 Ackley is one of the few cartridges that I will own and shoot until I die.

If anybody has any muzzle velocities they might care to post for 22-250 22-250AI or 223AI. Thanks much.

Mr. White,

The .223 sized case can get a whole lot of schit done if twisted properly and any magazine size constraints are addressed.

I chose the 22-250 because I am lazy and nothing was required to make things work. New barrel + 75gr A-Max and I was rollin'.

I get 3,300fps with good accuracy and the 75grainers. You can get 3K'ish with those weight bullets and the .223 but that's standing on it.

If you're leaning toward a .223 and a 8" twist, you won't be disappointed. But I like the 22-250 more better. I have both.

Amazon has Hornady for 37.99 per 50.

If you are a Prime member, 2-day shipping is free.

I joined Prime last Spring and have already saved more on shipping than the membership cost. I'm also watching Deadwood and Justified plus a bunch of other stuff in HD for free.

What bullet are you using in your .223AI? Did you finally move past the mini-ball?

Agreed, have both also, running my 223AI to 2900 w/75's. The 22-250 w/75's is an entirely different animal.

The Vmaxes did good out to 600.

That bullet is UBER. But they do make bullets that will do more UBER'er.

You're a difficult person.

And yet I hit PD's and crows with the 75 A-MAX, hogs with the 62 TSX......

Just more 222 Magnum magic. whistle
If you're wanting to still build one, you'll have to ask shrapnel for the brass.....and hope he doesn't gouge you.

Wonder if the 10" twist Ruger American 22-250 would stabilize the 62TSX?

Or I could pull a barrel from a 223 RAR, have it punched to a 22-250 and stick it on the other action. That would be UBER'er...

I'd have a RAR 22/250 if they didn't goat [bleep] that twist.

The stocks are far from great. I just Dremel out enough to make sure they float. I'm sure they'll be after market options soon with the volume they are selling.

I want one in 6.8 SPC....
