Down in California recently, on the trip down to New Mexico for the Campfire get together, I was sitting with my truck idling at a parking lot in Redding, while Scott F went into a Wendy's to grab a burger....

This guy comes up and tells me my engine is running rough... claims to be an automotive engineer.. tells me I need to try SLick 50 in it... he wasn't try to sell me any...

made claims of being on the design team when it was being 'invented'....

just out of curiosity, anyone ever regular use this stuff?

I've heard some swear by it and many more swear at it.. claiming it is just another chemical being marketed that doesn't do a darn thing....

This old guy was claiming it makes engines last a million miles etc...

when Scott got back to the truck,. this guy drove off in his Toyota Yaris, with Montana plates on it.... which makes me think he is just a transient looney...

but if anyone has had good luck with it, I'd like to hear it...

thanks...

Pure gimmick. Slick 50 doesnt mix with dino or synthetic oil. Try it. When you drain your oil, dont drain it hot, let it cool. Watch the color variation as it drains. Really want to check it out. Cut your filter open after 5000.

Save your money. Run good rotella or quaker state synthetic, mobil 1 if the price is right. The only additive to run, and only on higher mileage engines or vehicles that see mainly short trips and dont come to temp(oil) properly is rislone to help remove oil additives. Forget the rest, IMO.

I used the last bottle of "Prolong" I had last year & I hope they still make the stuff. (They were having an issue with the people who supplied their plastic bottles & I had a hard time finding any locally)

Anyhow, long story short, a guy I know hit a center divider that was about 14 inches high (he'd been drinking) he tore a hole in his pan & didn't realize it. He dumped the entire contents of his engine within 50 yds. He drove home (about 5 miles) & went to bed. Early the next morning, he got up & headed down the road to try finding someplace open to grab a bite. Right before he got back home his lifters started making a little noise so he looked at his pressure gauge...it read zero. Bottom line, as far as we could decipher was that he put nearly twenty miles on an engine with absolutely no oil in it...I was impressed & have used it for probably about 14 years now...does it work??? I don't know, because I've never tried to find out how far an engine will go without oil. My vehicles have always run a bit cooler after adding it. I have heard though that you don't want to use any of these additives until the engine has at least a few thousand miles on it. Here it is... http://prolong.com/

Slick 50 was all the rage 20 years ago or so, if it was as good as claimed it would still be, and not have drifted into obscurity like it has.

Drifted into obscurity? laffin...I don't use slick 50 but to say it's drifted into obscurity is absurd.

I used it in three diesel Landcruisers, and never noticed much difference in engine performance or longevity.

Where it did shine was in the gearbox of the first HZJ75 that I purchased from a mine in Queensland...the gearbox was shot, and I was broke so I dumped Slick50 into it and drove it for a further 2 1/2 years by double clutching in each gear and swearing every time the damn thing dropped out of fifth.

When the local Toyota dealer finally got the job of overhauling it they were somewhat surprised to find the bearings fell apart when the unit was dismantled, the mechanic and the dealership owner were horrified and somewhat shocked the thing was still working.

It felt fine apart from the aforementioned issues, and had lugged heavy loads across soft paddocks and mud with no problems that stiff bouts of profanity and dark thoughts could not ease.

These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

slick 50 was invented for use in airplanes and was later banned from use in them due to engine failure. suppose to teflon coat metal parts but it takes more heat to bond teflon to metal then you will ever get in a car motor.teflon will clog the oil pump screen and blow up a engine.

Can't believe some on this fire, there's 10 year old email jokes and memes that are brand new to em. It's as if these people have been living under a rock.

I'm waiting for the: "hey did y'all know they made flush terlots now?"

Didn't know they still made that stuff. Haven't seen it for sale for years.

Only time we ever used it was at a water slide at Emerald Isle beach. My two brothers and I sprayed our backs with the stuff and then went down the center chute which had no curves. First to emerge from the pipe traveling about Mach 1, I skipped off the water twice, lost my suit, and hit the back wall of the wading pool. My two bothers came out in quick succession. The resulting tidal wave knocked video cameras off tables where grandparents were filming little Johnny and his water wings.

We were escorted out.

Go here: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

You will be able to learn everything fit to argue about oil and oil additives.

Had an older guy, older than me anyway, come up to me while I was idling my truck waiting for the wife at the grocery, he said my engine sounded rough. "Thanks, for telling me I said, but it's a diesel engine."

I use Amsoil Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil in my trucks, along with a dual bypass filter system, oil analysis and very extended change intervals. I wouldn't put any additives in these engines, the oil works just fine as it is, but at $12.10 a quart retail it should.

Anyone who uses oil of the proper specification for the vehicle and maintains it according to OEM schedule shouldn't need an additive. I found the various full synthetic oils to work best if the drain interval is extended out beyond the recommendation, backed by used oil analysis, otherwise the added expense isn't justified. The use of a bypass filter system protects the oil, not the engine, and is also only practical if one changes oil no more frequently than 25 - 30k miles, or more.

Slick 50? I don't think so.
