I just got a decent deal on an old Rem 760 in 35 Rem and I have a couple questions. I would like to put the old flip down dovetail rear sight back on it, where can I get one? I would like to pick up a spare mag, will a 308/708 7600 mag work? Someone put about 387 coats of sealer on the stock, what is good for stripping the sealer off?

Thanks

Congrats on scoring a 760 in 35Rem. I have several crazy

Your best bet for an extra magazine would be gun shows or gun smiths. Numrich and Brownells are out of stock. Maybe Amazon would produce one. Yes, a 308, 243, etc. magazine will work. My 7600 magazines work in my 760's. You might also try an ad for one right here in the classifieds.

For the rear sight I'd check gunsmiths/gunshops. They usually have boxes of old stuff they will let you look through to find what you need.

If you are looking for a peep sight, Brownell's has one that you install in the rear scope base holes.

I restored the wood on one a couple of years ago pretty much as you describe yours. Formby's furniture stripper worked for me--might have to apply it a couple of times. About four-five hand rubbed coats of Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil following their directions.

Hope this helps.

I found an original rear sight for an early 760 carbine on Gunbroker when I needed one.

Thanks guys. I cleaned the bore and took it for a spin @ 50yds with a poor rest. It came with a top of the line Simmons 8pt 3-9x40 but my last 3 shot group was pretty much 3 rounds touching with Win 200gr factory loads.

I really need to pull it down and clean the action, looks like the old dude loved his 3-1 oil, lol.

Thanks, I usually don't hit the good deals on guns.

I thought these were supposed to be free floated? Mine has a bracket at the end of the action tube that touches the barrel?

I can't advise on the bracket, but the only one I owned was a good shooter.

If it shoots good I wouldn't worry about the "bracket".

The poor little guy refuses to shoot the 200gr Win PP consistently, I guess I had one good 3 shot group.

I loaded up my normal load of 40.5grs H4895 and a 200gr Hornady RN and had back to back 3 shot groups under .5" @ 60yds so I guess I will leave it alone.

I may be able to get the original rear sight back from the guy that owned it, he thinks he knows where he put it up.

That is exactly the same as my load for my 7600 carbine! Scary accurate.

I shoot it in my Marlin 336 so I just stuck some together to try in the 760. It is super accurate in both guns.

ya know, I'd bet of ALL the 760s made in 35 Remington, half of them have to reside in PA....with the other 30% of them residing in Michigan, especially on the U.P.....

I sure remember a lot of old timers in Minnesota, thought the ULTIMATE DEER RIFLE was a Rem Model 8 chambered in 35 Remington..

I have a Model 8 .35 Rem that is in great shape, I have a 1976 Marlin 336 .35 Rem that looks great and now this Remington 760 .35 Rem. It's the roughest looking of the bunch but it's got some character to it.

I think I may go Burris FFII 2-7x35 and set it in some Talley lows, thoughts?

Can't see why that little Burris wouldn't work. Can you get Talley's for a 760?

I normally use Leupolds in various configurations...1-4X, 1.5-5X, 3X, or 4X.

About two weeks ago I found a late 70's 760 35Rem, UNFIRED for my son. I put a Leupold 2-7X Compact on it and really like it. Should be very much the same as the Burris.

I am a Leupold fan myself, I may scrap the Burris idea since the 3p#4 isn't available anymore, only the ballistic plex.

I thought these may fit, but I could be wrong: http://www.talleymanufacturing.com/Products/Lightweight-Alloy-Scope-Mount/Remington/30MM-Model-4-6-74-76-750-7400-7600-(Low).aspx

The screw spacing and threads on a 760 are different than a 7600.

Might want to double check before you order them.

I ordered a 4x with the post & duplex reticle from the Leupold custom shop for my 7600. later I moved it to my Rem 660 350 mag. when the Burris Signature Safari scope I bought wouldn't mount low enough on the 660.

I'll try to get some pics up this weekend.

I got a deal on a 2-7x33 Ultimate Slam with SABR reticle, I think I'm going to like it. New rings are on the way also. It has a Weaver rail so I just ordered some low Leupold aluminum rings for it, these extra highs don't hardly come in correctly.

I was shocked it didn't have see thru rings on it honestly.
