So JiminIdaho did a nice job having the stocks on Zastava Lh Mausers slimmed down, refinished and checkered. None of the ones I got have stocks worth putting that much effort into--they were plain as mud. But I picked up a 7.62x39 off gunbroker with a stock that will really look nice I suspect after a little effort. They left so much wood on that I am sure there is a gunstock in there somewhere. The wood must be pushing a quarter inch thick beside the action. Too bad they cut the inletting so sloppy behind the tang. Sure I can glass it in, but it will never look as good as it could have. The rollover is among the first things to go . It currently weighs 38.6 oz; stay tuned...

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Great buy. I think you'll find even more figure in the wood once the stock goes on a diet. I would be tempted to use the traditional Alkanet root oil treatment too, could pop out even more figure. Take photos.

I will be taking photos as the project progresses. Modifying an existing stock is a good entry/intermediate level project, so I assume people will find the tutorial (and others' critique of how I do it) to be useful.
I have already gone after it with a spokeshave and rasp. The wood is surprisingly blond once I got the finish off.

Well, I couldn't take it. I normally just do stock projects in the winter, but I had to see what a little rasp time could yield. Here a couple pics to show how much excess wood there was. The width of the stock at the rear screw hole is now over .10" thinner than the original side. Width of the top "rim" for the forend was .28", now it is .10"

Nice mate,
Hope it's going to shoot as well as it is going to look!

I'll bet it shoots well enough. The cartridge is only meant for 100-200 meters anyway.

out of curiosity, I would be interested to know what the weight difference is? If you get a chance, I would love to see a picture of the left side, especially around the safety.
Looks MUCH better and some really nice work!

That is looking great. Keep the pictures coming.
Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.

Man I can't wait to see the grain in that stock once you are done. Are you going to checker it or leave it smooth?

Wow! Great improvement with a little of your skilled sweat equity! Look forward to the finished product.
I've seen more well-shot game lost with TSXs than any other premium bullet.
