Growing up with 3 siblings that all hunted and both my parents, we cobbled together whatever we could to go hunting. Half of it was the old single shot H&R Topper ,20 gauges with rifle lugs, but in those days it was just round balls, referred to as Punkin Balls. Not one of us ever considered not going because we didn't have a better gun. My father hunted with a Marlin 94 in 38-40,my mother used a Winchester 94 in 30-30. Us four kids took what ever was left or we could borrow.
I suspect there still are a lot of families out there in the same predicament.
I built up one custom gun that I had about $2000 in and it didn't kill any more elk and deer than the less expensive ones. It went down the road. Traded for a Bushmaster AR that also went down the road. I have a 96 Swede 6.5 that I paid $69 for and I have about $200 more in it with upgrades. Plus a 6X Leupold scope. It will shoot rings around most factory guns.
The most expensive guns I have are not hunters. Colt SAA in 38-40 worth about $1000 and Marlin 94 in 38-40 worth about $800. Two SXS 12 gage shotguns. An Ithaca NIB and Fox Steringworth, both valued at over a $1000. Those two are wall hangers. I don't have a deer or elk rifle worth more than $600, including the scope on them.
So the question is. Would you stay home and not hunt if all you had was a $200 gun? Bet not.

You lost me at your "left handed"
Right, eye dominant, and shoot right handed. But that was not my point. With a little time, planning and effort, one can let his assets support him, rather than he support his assets. Then guns and hunting can be at least very inexpensive, and many times profitable. "There is no crime in being poor, only dressing poorly" .......... Most likely I will, and for a profit. But first I want to kill some critters with it. Best, GWB

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Good post saddlesore. For me, rifles are tools, as long as the function right not to concerned how pretty they look.

Tough to trump the humor of a Golf Cart Safari and a Haybale Rifle "critique".

What's the view on ugly, cheap women? I say yes if she could pack a hind quarter. She could bring her Savage Walmart 30-06. I'd even let her do the cooking. I'll keep the fire dim.

Saddlesore, I'm in the young kids stage of family life, so the gun collection is way down the priority scale. I don't mind. I get the nice guns thing. My father had several, and I remember how he was overly protective of them.
I hunted with one of his rifles a few times as a teen, and I recall being terrified of dinging the stock, or marring the finish. Terrified was the right word too. I recall several times I fell carrying that gun, and I found a way to put my body between the ground and the gun, so that it didn't get roughed up every time. It wasn't worth it.
When cheap, plastic guns became plentiful, I jumped on them. I'd rather carry a gun where the globe won't explode if it gets banged around, as I hunt a lot of steep nasty stuff, and sometimes thick timber with lots of deadfall. I plan to give the same beater utility guns to my children if they want to hunt.

Stick: utility cartridge, utility rifle, utility truck, and utility woman sound like a good hunt to me.

I'm going with a Marlin X7 270 this year topped with a Scopechief 4x. Might even try some Winchester PPs in it.

Bulk CoreLokts are hard to find here in Canada these days. Too bad as I've had good luck with them in the past. I have a few PPs here that I can load up instead.

It's a shame you didn't get a shot with one of those schweet leisure suits.....
None of that, but Ive got a few with sweet truckers hats and woodland camo on! Leisure suits were for cruising' for chicks.. Ingwe, I hate to be the one to break this to you, but those pics are the redneck equivalent of a leisure suit.......
