I just picked up a 243 with a hart 9 twist tube on it and wondered if 105 berger vlds will stabilize in it. I have some hornady 105 bthps that have worked in the past along with amaxs in 9 twists but since they are non existant right now I am thinking of trying the bergers for deer and targets. Also does anybody have any experience with the 105 hornady bthp on game? Thanks

haven't used them on game yet, first season for me to be trying for a candidate...
but as a side note, the 105 A Maxes would not stabilize in a one in 10 twist Model 70 I have, but the 105 BTHPs would stabilize in the one in 10 twist just fine...
so for anyone who wants to use one of these 105s, and only has a one in 10 twist.. the 105 BTHP is your Huckleberry.....
My choice would be the 105 BTHP anyway, given the success I have with the 87 grain BTHP....

Should stabilize ok with 1:9 twist but 1:8 twist would be better. Only way to know for sure is to load some up and shoot it.
Not sure how they perform as a hunting round. Most here seem to love the VLDs. I've been on the accubond band wagon as of late. Right now they are flying extremely well for me out of my aught 6 and my wife's .243

Very much worth the risking a box of bullets to find out as your chance of success are pretty high.

Thanks guys.
John, I was hoping you would chime in. No doubt about the lethality of the 105 from what I have seen in your posts and vids.
What powders should I look at the VLD?
Thanks

I have had great luck with Retumbo. My custom throated 243s get 50grs. Not saying it is safe just saying it has never blown up a rifle.

Thanks again John. Just curious but I assume your greybull 243s are built on short actions. If so do you throat them to be able to load the 105s to mag length?

I am no longer associated with Greybull.
I have built a lot of .243s on short action. The SA 700s required an extended mag box to accommodate the throating I found to work best with the 105gr VLD.
My preference these days is to use a long action. I think they feed better and I much prefer the better front scope ring support the long action affords.

Gasp! You mean a short action isn't necessary for a rifle to shoot accurately?

Always wondered why people get bent out of shape over having an action that is a mere 1/2" longer, yet allows you all the room you need to seat heavy bullets.

Cause it allows a POS outta-true action to be a wee-bit more outta true. Square/true it all up and all is well. SA cartridges ARE inherently more accurate. You can be a dumbschidt and argue with Dr. Palmisano but I'll pass. Ask any old-time highpower guys what happened to the old "V" target. Hint, it was that new fangled 308 that made it obselete.

good info guys. John or whoever, one more question, I picked up some retumbo today as it is one of the few powders easily available in my area and just out of curiosity I weighed out 50 grains and dumped it in a 243 case. Even with a 6" drop tube it came damn near to the case mouth. I am ok with compressed loads but this seems extreme. Is this normal? I plan to work up from around 46 grains but before I do I wanted to see if this sounded correct.

I still gots a ways to go with that one. good info guys. That has been my experience and getting 50grs into brand new WW cases takes a slow pour with the 6 inch drop tube. Lapua cases have a bit more room. I think Hogdon lists 49grs as max for the 105gr bullet in a SAAMI chamber. I get 3050fps in 26 inches with the 50grs in my throat. The SAAMI throat is very short and steep, much like the SAAMI throat for the 7mm Rem Mag. A pretty good chance this contributes to the quirky rep for both rounds. As always pay attention.

John Burns, If going long action, any advantage in using the .243 over the 6/06 or .260 over the 6.5/06? John

The same question could be asked if going SA between 6/.284, .243 Win AI or SAAMI .243 Win. I get 3050fps from the 105gr with good barrel life. More speed won't help me but more practice seems to pay a dividend.
