Not Good.

Harris bipod and portable bench.
Calm wind.
CCI MiniMags and Winchester bulk.
Two different scopes that are known to be good.

50 yard groups from 4.2" to 10". Some keyhole hits as well.

Message has been sent to Savage.

I have never had any rifle, rimfire or centerfire, shoot this bad with any ammo. Just bought a well-used Rem 510 that will outshoot this thing no matter what it's fed. Rifling at the muzzle end looks like the tool chattered during cutting. (Chatter marks are in the new Savage. Not the 510)
I have no doubt that the vast majority are very accurate. My neighbor has a 17 HMR Savage that is quite impressive.

On a good note, when visiting the same shop today I picked up a used CZ 452 17HMR that looks like new at a very reasonable price. Now I have a tuning project if the Savage is MIA for a while.

Sounds like a warranty issue if all the regular things like scope and mounting are fine. My Anschutz 1416 shoots much better with Eley or other good target ammo at 50 yards but it is the difference between .35-.25 with target ammo and .75-1" with HV stuff. It would never be 4-10 " if it were just ammo.

Keyhole hits on a rimfire? Never a good sign.

I missed that reading fast. Keyhole makes it a warranty issue for sure. I would get a refund and buy a CZ but I bet they will only replace the rifle.

There is rifling for the entire length. The last 1+" at the muzzle is very rough.

I will call the shop in a few minutes to get their opinion. No reply from Savage yet.

Took the TR back to the shop and they agreed that the rifling is messed-up. They are sending it back to Savage.
Sucks not having a new gun that I just bought, but the 452 looks like it will make up for it. 2 shots to get on target at 50 yards. Next three were .35" using a tractor tire for a rest. And it was $130 less than the Savage!

Shop said the rifle will be probably be replaced.

Finally got reply from Savage customer service yesterday afternoon with an offer to arrange return. I asked for an explanation as to why the MKII TR model has issues with rifling.

A bystander at the shop suggested that TR means Training Rifle... Savage trains their new employees with this model.

Savage customer service told me the barrel is being replaced. It should take another 3-4 weeks.

Picked up the re-barreled TR on Tuesday and had time to install an EGW rail, cheapo BSA Sweet 22 scope and shoot a few groups today at 50 yards.

Bulk Federal, Winchester, CCI Blazer and Minimags are 1.5" - 3".
Federal Target .75"
CCI Green Tag .45"
Federal Match .40"

However, the first shot after changing targets is consistently .75" high and slightly left with the better ammo and 2" with bulk. I suspect the action screw torque needs to be fine tuned and I will also be ordering a DIP bottom metal this week as the factory piece was drawn in pretty severely as received.

Put a Vortex CF2 6-18 on the TR last night, adjusted the Accutrigger and tried it out today.

Average of three 5 shot groups:
CCI Standard Velocity .775"
CCI Green Tag .401"

I did not encounter the first shot flyer issue today even without replacing the bottom metal. When I removed the stock to adjust the trigger I found that the front barrel pin was digging into the stock. I relieved the stock around the pin so that could have been causing the flyers.

Barrel seems OK now. I don't know how much better it could get with me pulling the trigger. I did install a DIP bottom metal but haven't shot with it yet.

While I'm posting, I'll take time to share some insight if you should have to return anything to Savage.

1. Do not ship anything except the rifle and bolt. Maybe the magazine since I did get mine back. I left everything in the box as purchased in case the dealer might swap it with a new one. I received back a different box with no accessories, manual, etc..

2. If you are sending in for a rebate make sure to remove the UPC label prior to returning. The box I received did not have one.

Savage customer service said that all boxes returned to them are destroyed and the repaired firearms are shipped in a new box. My repaired rifle was shipped in a different box but certainly not a new one since it had marks from a different type of rifle. They promptly sent all of the replacement accessories and an email to print and use in place of the missing UPC.
