All of my other 22-250s are heavy Remingtons with little pill pushing 1-14 twists. I've been wanting to try one of the americans so I've got one coming in 22-250 (should have been here today) mad UPS! Just wondering what powders and bullet weights are working best in the 1-10 twist Rugers? I got it for truck/ATV gun, for coyotes, ghogs..........I'm thinking 55gr?
Thanks for any info you can share,
Will

If you want to shoot 55s then H380, 4895, or 4064 have all worked well for me. My favorite 55 load is 36.0 grains of imr 4895 and a 55 nosler BT or hornady sp.

The 10 twist will let you go heavier as well. I like the 65 sierra gameking and the 63 sierra smp (the latter will stabilize in slower twists as well) with varget 4895 or 4064.

For varmits and predators the 55's are probably the best way to go unless you really want to stretch the range out. In that case a heavier target bullet will help you with wind drift.

Good luck

Dude, I agree w/the 55's. I have no experience w/the 22-250 but have had a Swift continuously since 1973, It simply electrocutes most anything that gets shot with it and I don't see why the 250 would be much different. I use a book max load of H-414 and 55 BT's for Coyotes as they have much better penetration than V-max however accuracy is equal. If I were shooting in any area where over penetration/ricochets would be a problem I would use a 50 gr V max full blast. I bought a Ruger mk2 .204 w a short barrel for a truck coyote gun, it shot great was as flat as the Swift but did not have the horsepower and fed like s... I'm sure it was the straight case, abrupt shoulder, short seating of the very pointed bullet and small interior of the receiver. I was always jamming them into the top left of the inside of the receiver in the heat of battle, Sold it. The 22-250 should feed well under any circumstances with that tapered case, the long sloping Swift in my old Ruger 77V sure does! -Muddy

Thanks for the input, hopefully I'll get it today. I've got a scope waiting and brass ready to load so i should be able to start trying her out soon. I've got plenty of 55gr v max and sp hornaday so I'll probably start there. I've got all the powders you listed except H380. I seem to always have good luck with varget and 4895 (in the right applications)
Thanks again

Varget does ok but it is not my first choice for 55 grainers and under in the 250. 4895 is hard to beat. the 55 hornady sp is a heck of a bullet, tough enough to hold up on coyote bones and in my experience they are about the most accurate softpoint out there.

Keep us posted.

Alright, I'll start out with some 4895 then. I just checked my powder shelf and there was a can of H380 hiding behind the 4895 so I should be set!

I just noticed your load was imr 4895, I have H4895. Should have read closer. The Hodgdon site list 35.5gr top load for 55gr.
Yes, for the money the Hornaday 55sp are hard to beat.

Try IMR 4064 and the Sierra 1365s and you will be happy, happy, happy.

Thanks for sharing load data,
I picked up the 250 thur. Eve and put a redfield 4x12 revolution that I had laying in the safe on it. The trigger isn't terrible but for as light as the rifle is I'd like it lighter. All I've done so far is get it on paper with part of a box of Hornaday 50gr. V max factory loads that I got with a trade. It shot a 1" 3 shot group at 100, not overly impressive but 2 shots were touching so there is potential and the flyer could have been me too. I've got brass ready to load so as soon as I do I'll let you know how it does.

38 grains of H380 with 52-55 gr pills. This is how H380 got it's name.

The Ruger didn't like the first test loads of 34gr of imr4895 behind a 55gr. Hornaday sp. I didn't even measure it but had to be at least 1 1/2" and the primer was starting to show pressure so I'm not going higher unless a different seating depth reduces the pressure. This was with the bullet seated .010 off.
But on the other hand, my son shot this group in the remington 700 sps that I recently traded for, this was a load that shoots great in and old 700 bdl I have. Needless to say this one isn't going anywhere. He added the rifle cost to the I owe dad list on the side of the frig. Where we keep track of all his gun purchases until he work or pays them off.
Best group he has ever shot.

It's getting better. I tried a lighter load in the American this evening and it did better, also seated the bullets a little further off the lands to hopefully reduce a little pressure too. I don't know if it will get any better but I'll try some more loads. It is so light it's tough to shoot with the 3+ lbs. trigger. Still for the money should make a great truck, ATV gun.

I determined that part of my problem with test loads was due to a bad scope. When I tried to make a slight windage adjustment the point of impact first didn't move and then moved 1 1/2" down and right. I usually don't put an untested/unknown scope on a rifle that I'm working loads for and this is the reason. I bought the Redfield used from a friend that, come to find out got it off a trade and had never used it. So I pulled it off today and mailed it back to Beaverton.

Will,

Hope a straight scope gets you shooting closer to what you hoped for. Let me know how those 63s work when you get a chance to try them

Yep, all I had heard was good too, and MOA would have been acceptable, just wanted to see what I could " squeeze" out of it with some hand loads. This 60gr load should work well for coyotes too. This rifle is the stainless or all weather, think I might try a camo job on the black stock. I'll post pics if it turns out.

I know this is off topic in the reloading forum but thought it would be just as well to post this here instead of starting a new thread......
I've never been one to paint my guns always thought it looked cool but just couldn't bring myself to do it. The black plastic stock on the Ruger was just begging to be my first canvas so I attempted to imitate the NatGear camo pattern, I've seen it on some stainless 10/22s and thought it looked good. Here's some pics, let me know what you think.

I bought a nice Leupold scope from a member so I've been shuffling scopes around and now have a Burris 4.5x14 on the Ruger and that's what I plan to keep on it. I got a card from Leupold saying they received the Redfield but It's going to be a couple more weeks before I get it back. I loaded several of the 60 gr Hornaday loads it liked but I'll still keep trying others and post what works.
