Grogel was our night security guard. There is roomer that he does it so he can play with all the toys while no ones around. Thanks Gary for keeping things safe.

I made several lucrative deals with Gary on Steve's stuff. Mostly things like recoil pads and the lighter shooting calibers.

I may have a picture on my camera if it was sitting in front of Gary. Tonight should finally be quiet enough that I might get a chance to get to those pics.

Gnoahhh built this Cherry wood Cartridge box with a sliding top and mailed it to me. I was asked to bring it to the fest as a door prize. I placed it on my table with a note and it was admired by all who noticed it. The top slides like its on bearings yet closes tightly. Overall the fit and finish are wonderful. I felt a little guilty when my name was drawn from the basket first, but on the inside I was yelling "suck it bitches" as I ran off with the box. The lighting in my office doesnt show the color of the wood... I also had some reloading blocks Gary made from Cherry. I took these photos in the sun and it really shows the color of the wood.... What did you use as finish on the box Gary?

All Kidding aside, That was a very nice Box that GARY made and Donated, It was Very nice as i said before of him to do that, and the craftsmanship was outstanding. ESPECIALLY as the Top Would Slide So Nice and lock up towards the end, but with easy of effort to open. as said before it was admired by all.

The finish is sand the wood to 600grit, mix the finish as follows:50/50 pure tung oil/spar varnish + melt enough beeswax to make the whole mess into kind of a slurry. While still real warm rub it on, let stand 10-15 minutes, wipe off. Let dry over night, repeat. Next day vigorously wax with a good furniture paste wax. I am not a fan of "oil" finishes, as some of you may know, but I do like them on cherry objects that won't see rain/sleet/snow such as one would subject a hunting rifle to.
It was my pleasure to provide something for the Fest- sort of a way to project my presence there by proxy. You guys mean a lot to me.
As a side note regarding that which kept me from attending, I have finally jumped through the last hoop standing in my way of going under the knife on Tuesday. I spent all afternoon today being subjected to a nuclear stress test which I needed to pass for the final go-ahead. Being too gimpy to withstand the treadmill, they induced the rapid heart rate chemically. The last time they did it I swore never to undergo that again- I almost crashed as a result. This time though everything went smoothly-- and I passed with flying colors! Yay! Now I have the final green light to go ahead with the total hip replacement on Tuesday. Getting that done will allow me to "get back in the game", so to speak. I dream of getting back into the grouse coverts, the goose pit blinds, and of course the deer woods with a trusty Savage in my hands. It's a little late in the season to expect much in the way of grouse hunting this year, and maybe even no deer hunting (lots of rehab in my future)-- but, look out next year!!
Screw "the Golden Years."

I should note too that the wood in those objects was harvested in Pennsylvania 60+ years ago. Nothing like old PA cherry for that deep red color.

Congrats Gary on winning the beautiful box !! Something to treasure always.
Having lost last deer season to back surgery, my prayers and sympathy go out to you gnoahhh: just remember that season will roll around again. Hang tough and keep that in the back of your mind on the rough days. I pray that you have beautiful nurses to pester and that they put up with your [bleep] !!!! No telling what a man will do when he is on those drugs :):):):) Just remember.... you are not responsible for what you do !!! LOL I had ugly and fat nurses, so the drugs helped me bear it. Luck to you !!
When I saw that first nurse, I was just coming around, and thought at first I was under a bear attack !!!!! EEEEEEKKK!!!

What a fine story all around. Just quality people everywhere here.
As far as the hunting goes- I learned to pattern bears from a crippled guy that had to get them in a trail or two track road, as he could not retrieve them down a canyon. That dude there was SMART about figuring out when the biggest bears walked the trails and he set himself up to score on those bears. I saw him predict to within minutes of when a particular bear would walk thru a given spot that he could drop and retrieve with a minimal effort. I know bears are extremely habitual, but with a little different approach and maybe a strong kid along you could easily still fill tags, on your terms. I suggest you recover quickly and get back out there! Best wishes!!!

I wish you well on your surgery and sorry but I have to give you a bit of unsolicited advice. After the surgery do everything that your doctor tells you to do. I've had several friends that have had hip replacements and those that went well followed their doctors orders and those that had problems ignored them. I truly hope you regain your mobility.

Believe you me, I'll follow the doctor's orders to a tee.
The will to hunt can be pretty strong. A couple years ago I saw an ancient hunter coming up out of the woods, shuffling along with a walker, with his rifle strapped to the handle bars.

I know at LEAST one young veteran doing EXACTLY the same thing. I hope your surgery goes LOTS better than my wife's did, and hers was FAR less invasive. The VERY BEST of luck from me to you. Hang in there oh great one.

I had both my hips replaced on the same day, that was in '07. I did everything the doctor and physical therapist advised me to do. I made a great recovery, the doctor will tell you that you'll be as good as you're going to be in a year. In my case improvement, mostly in strength and range of motion continued into the second year. Today, seven years later I'm good as new. Matter of fact in those seven years I have had both shoulders repaired, now I have so many replacement parts that I feel new. Hope your surgery and recovery goes as well as mine did.

Gary, a further word of unsolicited advice from an old almost retired pulmonary intensivist: Do not let the pain get ahead of you...take adequate analgesia and if at all possible PREVENT the onset of pain...once it gets ahead of you it is hard to stop and sometimes becomes a permanent fixture. My wife had a left knee total replacement 10 days ago and is just doing great. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, John

Glad to hear that the surgery went well, I stood on my new hips just 4hrs. after surgery. Before leaving the hospital I walked the length of the hallway and climbed and decended steps. In my case I did PT on my own 2x/day, the therapist visited 2-3x/wk. Take your pain meds 30min, prior to PT and ice 30min. after and you'll do fine. Above all DO NOT do more than the therapist prescribes. Best of luck with your recovery.

I'm back! Been a rough week. Downside: sadistic therapists. Upside: really good drugs!
Nurses are a bunch of sweethearts. I don't plan to break their hearts by confessing that I'm perfectly capable of showering on my own...
My surgeon claims to have forgotten my request to save the old bone for my dog... called my therapist CRUELLA nice young lady norm

Oh, I see you are familiar with my therapist, too. It wouldn't be so bad if she didn't make me carry her leather-wrapped butt over my shoulders while doing it.

I sit and look out my window and see the first couple of leaves changing and squirrels gamboling about, and I want so much to get out in the woods. Perhaps they won't mind if I set up my Hornet in the open window...
