We got two kinds of bears up here. Don't unload you rifle after you get your elk down. I had a buddy in college that got followed by a griz for miles while packing his elk out...

Bummer. Everyone loses in situations like this. Wonder if he had spray or a gun. Hell, I don't leave my house without a gun and I live in town. For now. Sadly.

Very sorry to hear about the victim, but it comes as no surprise to me that there are plenty of bears around there. I saw one from the ski lift in Jackson Hole one summer quite a while ago, now.

I would never tramp around in those parts alone without packing protective measures. Many say that spray works well, but you have to be pretty close. Others like cowbells, but that does not impress me. confused

There is an old joke that you can recognize grizzly bear scat because of the little bells in it and that it smells like pepper.

not grizz country, but one day i stopped by the f.s. office in williams. They had a brochure about being in bear country, and if approached, you should rattle a tin can with pebbles.
I though a 45/70 to rattle would be more afficient.
I remember going through i think it was yosemite in calif years ago with warning signs about bears. A couple of women backpackers had been munched. The theory was one of them was in her period and the bear was drawn to them by the smell, bluntly.
There were also signs around about guns being prohibited.
Yeah sure.
I remember telling the wife that would be a cold day in Hell.

Was fishing in MT a few years ago and was surprised to see what I thought was a small black bear swimming towards me as I stood on the bank. As it got closer I could tell it was a griz cub. I was able to snap a few photos before realizing that mom was on my side of the river with the other cub. I slowly walked into the open river up to my knees and un holstered my .44.

Nothing quite like a bear encounter to wake you up in the morning.
