Anyone use this bullet for hunting? I am talking about the pointed one. Would it be enough for elk? Thank you!

It's worked great on 2 black bears for my brother. I'd certainly use it.

I believe Steve Timm said it worked great on elk and he would know, as many as he has killed. powdr

I have never hunted elk with that load but have shot probably 20 deer with it, I cannot ever recall a deer stopping one. I sure would not be afraid to hunt elk with it although I may have some reservations about a long raking shot.

The only one I've recovered from about a dozen deer was one that went through a 1 1/4" muscadine vine first and went through the bones of both shoulders. Found it under the skin on the far side. The entrance hole was about 1 1/2" and that really threw me until I found the vine that had been center punched.

I think Hornady makes TWO 200 gr pointy bullets in .358 cal, BTW. one is the spire point, and the other is the FTX. Both should work just fine, but I have zero experience with either.

I still believe the 200 AB (the reloading equivalent of a unicorn, based on availability) would be best overall, because of its improved BC.

Good luck to you either way.

Have used it for deer with the same result as many here. I wouldn't feel under-equipped on an elk hunt with it.

The only one I can recall 'catching' in a deer went in the right neck/shoulder area and ended up in left hindquarter. I was above the deer on a sidehill shooting slightly downhill, he dropped on the spot.

This doe took a 200 Hornady SP with 51.0 of TAC at about 150-175 yards. Pass through that blew out the the opposite side shoulder on the way out.

I've put them through a lot of deer, mostly herd management stuff. Only one I've caught, went through one deer broadside at 160, 60 yards of air, 15' of privet hedge too thick to see through, and a second deer at 230-ish, shoulder to off ham...HUGE entrance. Never weighed it, but at least half of it was there, ending up backwards. Accidental, but I had a ridge behind that third deer, and never saw it enter that privet, so it had to walk in for 75 yards, dead in line, out of sight. That bullet is PLENTY tough for small deer.

What powder are you all running in the 358 winchester. I need to get a load together with Barnes 200 TTSX, and have Benchmark, CL-2 and IMR 4895.

TAC is the new sweetheart and velocity champ in the 358, I have not tried any yet. I use IMR 3031 for the 200 grain tips and IMR 4895 for 225 and up.

I was using 4320, but TAC yielded a significant increase in velocity and crazy low SD. Groups did not improve radically, but werent horrible in the first place.

for TAC powder, use MAG primers.

Yes, get some TAC. When I get a chance I'm going to run it with either the 180 or 200 TTSX.

Cloverleafs at 100 with a featherweight Savage 99. Went stem to stern in this <<ahem>> large wolverine <cough>. Perfect 150 grain mushroom.
