Sam, just reading the tent thread made me think about the fact that you and I probably care a lot more about water resistance than most of these guys. I was talking about breaking in a pair of boots a while back and one of the guys told me to soak them in water and wear them 'til they get dry. They don't realize that things NEVER get dry where we live. Pat, thats a fact. I have done a LOT of camping in heavy rain. December last year, in the Ocala NF, a huge early morning thunder storm with 50 mph winds blew through my camp site. I was using my older Coleman 4 man tent, not the Eureka. About 3 AM, one of the tent poles that supports the back window awning broke, and it started to funnel gallons of water right into the tent. Woke up afloat. Geez what a mess.
Sam......

this is the only pic I have of the Kodiak +1 on the Kodiak. Cabela's has 'em.... Something warm and cozy about canvas tents and those are some nice ones.^^ Makes my little SpringBar look like a Tobacco Road hovel. I love it though. Plenty of room for a cot, stool, heater and two dogs.

For a car camping tent I look for a tent that I can walk into without stooping too much , having broke my back several years ago bend way over each time in and out of a tent gets old. Also I like a floorless tent and wood burning stove , VERY relaxing in the evening and during foul weather. Carbolic dome...

FG,
That tent has a floor right? Do you just use a Mr. Heater or something similar?

Eureka makes a wide variety of tents -- some "reasonably" priced, some can get up to $500. Their Timberline series ranges from 2-man to 6-man and heavy-duty versions, the SQ. http://store.eurekatent.com/timberline-seriesI have an old Eureka Wind River -- looks like Cabelas' Alaskan. It's old and probably won't last another season. Wish they still made it. Tom

$500 for something you going to use to keep your stuff and arse dry several times a year seems reasonable to me. Not much more entertaining than driving through a Wisconsin state park after an all night down poor. Walmart tent buyers with more money in clothes lines and tarps than tents for their "camping".

I would gladly get another Coleman, W-Ponent, but the bean counters killed it and
Coleman appears not to be looking at the higher end of the tent market anymore.

If you are at all concerned about cold or cold weather, I'd highly recommend looking at one of the tipi style tents from Kifaru, SeekOutside or others that will take a stove. Weight and bulk won't be a problem for you, and a stove makes a world of difference.

I saw these demonstrated at Costco a couple years ago. They are interesting. Has anyone seen one outside of Costco or use one? http://www.blackpinesports.com/black-pine/tents/turbo-tents
