What length handguard (free float) is needed to cover a low profile gas block on a AR barrel with a rifle length gas tube?
I never thought I'd grow up to be a grumpy old man, but I did, and I'm killin' it.

14" to completely cover it. 13" will usually go about half way over it.

Thanks. Torn between the Troy VTAC Alpha and the Midwest Ind Gen 2 SS Series over a 20" fluted SS barrel.

VTAC would be my vote. Neither is bad, but prefer the Troy rails.

My only 'gripe' with the Troy VTAC Alpha is the way that the picatinny section are attached. Seems they require a 'backer' and adding sections requires removal of the handguard, whereas the MI handguard is D&T'd.

They do use a backer, not that difficult to install, and they are steel to steel connected. Either is a good choice.

I'd go 15" on a rifle gas and it would be a Troy.

I just installed a MI ss gen2 12" on my first AR. No real world experience with it yet but hard to beat the light weight and it seems rock solid. Plus the price .... Good luck with your shopping.

I'd go 15" on a rifle gas and it would be a Troy. That's what I did. And would again.

Might want to look into the Seekins rails. The MCSR and SP3R rails both come in 14"-15" versions and now work with Keymod accessories.

This might give you a better idea for length : 16" 7.62x39 with a Troy 13" tube mounted on a DPMS lower. If you have a 20" barrel you might want a longer tube. Ken

15" Troy rail over rifle length gas. You can see the gas block under the rail, if you want it completely covered I wouldn't go shorter than 15".
