Getting close now and I will again try to give a blow by blow report of this seasons hunts. I just set up a few trail cams a couple days ago, but with out a crop of apples on the trees it will be harder getting a good inventory of the bucks. A visual scouting run at last 1/2 of light yesterday evening showed approximately 50 deer between 2 clover fields a lot of small and borderline bucks and 2 shooters, actually one cause one is a 1/2 rack that would have been a 140" 8pt This year I hope will be even more entertaining and you can see 1st hand that my reports are accurate. I will be videoing from 1st person view using my Go Pro camera
Been watching a big guy in a clover field on back side of one of the properties I hunt.Set up a trail cam today to try and get a picture of him.1 week till kick off
Season opened yesterday still warm here 78 degrees right now but I'm heading in for an afternoon hunt. Not expecting much but will be good to get in the woods I will report as things happen
I'm in my stand I killed the 8 Pt archery buck last year I slipp in undetected This will be a better stand in a couple weeks once the seeking begins In the woods about 300 yards from a clover field they have been hitting Hope to catch something heading to feed right before dark
That was it for this morning This guy showed up on one of my cameras decent buck, boarder line shooter,Need a closer look seems to have good mass but tines are not that long
I am pleased I didn't fall out of my treestand, given that I forgot my safety harness and the wind was blowing the wrong way. And my trail cam isn't working.
But at least I managed to miss the doe that ran in front of me on the highway. And I pulled a giant sticker-thistle from the nose of a Shetland pony.
Less than pleased with the Go Pro for filming hunts. Deer have to be super close to even show up and in low light its not good. Had a deer at 10 yds yesterday afternoon at dusk but video is too dark to see This Video is from yesterday morning with a doe less tha 10 yards from my stand(I am 30' up though) I will play with the Go Pro a bit more but so far it's not the best for a hunting video camera(fishing on my boat it's the best)
I'm biding my time... But still having fun Took the 1953 Ithaca 37 16ga for a spin today I'm extremely pleased with how well it shoots!Had one rooster get up real close and blew the head clean off!
In my stand calm morning 44 degrees Don't have great hopes for this spot as the food just isn't here this year, no apples on the trees for some reason Still a bit too early yet but I figured I was up and would sit for a while Didn't want to hunt my other 2 properties cause wind is wrong We shall see....
Dead here, what a big difference a year makes. Moved to another stand had 3 doe near it as I walked up. Pulled 2 camera cards not many pictures will have to see if any thing good or just the usual couple doe squirrels and raccoon It's boom or bust here dependent on the apples
Head in out shortly, I have a good wind for another property this morning, it's 32 degrees and we have our 1st hard frost this season so should be a good morning for deer movement...
I hunted Canadice yesterday morning and it was the same, slow is and understatement. It was so still early on that my stomach growled and startled me...........
Back in my stand for a quick morning hunt Warm this am 55 degrees and will be warming fast next couple days getting close to 80 degrees so after today I'm gonna hold back till temps drop
Ok hung a new stand today over looking the scrape I got the pictures from. Up about 20' Should be good, going to let it rest for a while before I hunt it
Yes Larry Lone wolf stand, they are the best. Limb is fine, all checks out,I try to leave as much undisturbed as possible also I shoot sitting, bow is always in my hand cam tucked in my rubber boot, less movement and always ready that way
If you have to stand when shooting turkeys they will be gone before you straighten your legs!
I like to have my bow in hand but I did make a hanger bracket that holds it right I'm front of me with an arrow knocked. I fall asleep far to often to trust holding my bow in my lap.
The millennium tree stands I use are so comfortable it's tough to remain awake for many hours of sitting!

I'm happy to shoot from the seat too but rarely get the opportunity. My hang on of choice for the past 25 years has been Screaming Eagle stands. Seat height is darn near perfect with them for an easy up or sitting shot, IMO.
Talk about sleeping on stand, today I hunted out of my Treewalker climber. Comfortable.........
I couldn't hold my bow for more than a few minutes without getting fidgety. I use the Realtree Ez hanger and it works great.
Dan, what are the grips like on your bow? You use a glove on your bow hand? The grip on my Elite is like an ice cube.....

Yep. I've been using 'em for over 25 yrs. Strongest stand I ever climbed into.
Only thing is I've been out of those treetops for some 10 yrs now.
trust me guys Lone wolf is head and shoulders above the screaming eagle
Never rode a Lone Wolf hang on or climber but their 21" seat height vs the SE 25" would be a minus for my knees and any quick stand ups. I've shot too many deer that came in from the dark side of the trail too to try and stay seated.............
You are taller than me Larry. In this set I have zero shooting behind me just way way to thick...banking on the run right in front of my stand and a visit to the scrape
The lone wolf is comfy and quiet and with the EZ hang hook the easiest set up you can imagine
Some bucks starting to show on my ghost town property, not quite what I'm looking for but encouraging And how about that buck moving at 5 pm in 79 degree weather
Wind will prevent me from hunting that stand till Monday am but it will be in the mid 30's at day break Monday should be good. Tomorrow I'll hit the ghost town spot cause of the wind but deer are starting to show up so maybe not a ghost town any more
Just whacked a big doe looked to be perfect shot 15 yards Small spike chasing and pestering her He came right thru after shot and stopped at 5 yards from me Had video rolling not sure if there was enough light for good footage Gonna stay put for a while and see what else is moving I'm in the ghost town spot
I'm in the warm confines of my buddies place. I killed a 2.5 year old 8pt last night, 15 yards Slick Tricked! Dressed out he goes 172lbs. I had a uphill drag that just about did me in....
Back in stand new property that I've killed many of my archery big bucks from I couldn't ask for a better scenario 30 yds from my stand right in the spot I arrowed 2 big bucks I have a fresh scrape opened up and it's right in my wheel house for shooting
L O L... I once hunted with a guy from Buffalo we nick-named "Howitzer Hill", he would have taken those 150 yard shots He would take 40 yard shots at carp on Irondequoit Bay, not giving anyone else a chance to shoot.
He's dead now... not to be missed by many.
It's great reading your posts, Thanks

OK just got home,my back is shot but its well worth it! Here's how it all went down... I passed a nice 8 point and then a few minutes later 2 doe crossed 100 yds from me. A few minutes later I caught move movement about 80 yds to my right, 2 nice buck! At first glance they both looked to be shooters. They stop and face off and hit horns a bit. Then they move behind some brush and they start fighting for real, antlers were cracking. I then grab my grunt call figuring if they are getting giggy that they will want to investigate anther buck in the area. Sure enough with in a few minutes the 1st one starts coming my way. As he's coming in I decide he's not what I want although he's nice. the 2nd buck starts to bring up the rear but half way to me he cuts off into the thickets. I think figures, damn it! The 1st buck stops at about 25 yds looking my way and after a minute cuts away parallel with me. At this point the 2nd buck makes a fatal mistake and comes out of the thicket and starts to follow. I scan and find 1 window at 30 yds and when he steps thru I release. Initially I thought I shot over him, and was disgusted but I should know better. That arrow, slick trick and luminock passed thru him and stuck in the ground beyond him so fast it was deceiving! He ran out in front of me and circled thru the woods,I heard a crash behind me.I waited a few minutes and got down to check my arrow and it was covered in bright blood,at that point I knew he was dead and I'd have my hands on him shortly. Followed the blood trail and he died about 75 yds behind my stand.
I checked the video and I have it all and its not dark!! Also have video of the 1st 8 pt I passed. It takes a while to get it down loaded and then uploaded to youtube so I will post the video tomorrow I didn't get great pictures as it was getting dark but I took a few on the back of the jeep and in my shed. I have 2 deer to butcher so now the work begins!
He's a beauty. Looking forward to the footage...........You should age him and slam him on a scale.
Have fun cutting two! I did mine today, solo. Wife had to work and kids are always too busy when I need them. Wrapped back straps & tenderloins, canned 7 qts and ground the rest.
Now I know you are home safe and sound I can go to bed........
Heres the video a bit long but its how it happened in real time You can here me grunt right at the start of the video, then a lot of watching and waiting as deer commit to come At the 5:30 min. mark 1st buck shows and at 6:17 he starts to leave just after 7:00 minute mark the buck comes out of thickets and shot comes at 7:18 minute mark
Back in the saddle this morning Have a couple doe tags and turkey is opened Need to keep a pulse in what and who is around for gun season in about 3 weeks
Did you know that the reason for piebald animals is breeding brother to sister or offspring to parent

The buck with the rope in his horns is in trouble. That WILL get tangled in the brush or in another bucks rack and one or two deer will die, count on it.
I've seen two deer and one elk in my life with rope or wire tangled in their racks. The elk was still alive but dragging a long stretch of rope, his days were certainly numbered. Both deer I found were dead with their rotting carcasses tangled in branches.
If that were some thin string or light electrical wire, maybe he could break it. But that looks like reasonably substantial rope. I don't see that poor bugger surviving til he drops them in Feb! Plus it's hanging around his neck too!

Looks like somebodys "hot wire" fence. Electric fences are a pain in the butt to maintain, and you have perfect evidence they are dangerous refuse to wildlife!

It's been pretty fast and furious the past few days. Bucks on the prowl. I wished I had not tagged out on my buck cause yesterday I had a giant pined and drawn on at 33 yds, he'd have been mine. He walked right in front of my camera as he filtered by! This morning to my disbelief I saw what I thought was the button buck pie bald coming through the thick brush but as it got closer I said " that's way to big to be a button buck" It was a 1 1/2 yr old buck with same pie bald markings! He rubbed up a sapling right in front of me. He passed my camera set up but I pulled the card last night and forgot to bring the replacement. The genes are already planted here!
Finally was able to get a mature doe in range late yesterday afternoon. I could have killed 10 buck this past week but no doe. Shot came at last 15 minutes of light. The deer reacted funny, she ran 40 yds and then stopped and walked into thickets. From her reaction I was nervous but when I got down at dark to retrieve my arrow it was covered in blood. I walked to where I last saw her and she wasn't there so I decided to wait till this morning to look for here. She was stone dead and was only 75 yards from where I hit her.
This thread is as good or better then any TV Hunting show. What a great idea you had and a great effort to keep this entertaining and up to date every day!

Speaking of TV heres the video shot comes at 4:49 minute of video There was a bit of cat and mouse as she knew some thing was up but I remained motionless until she calmed and then turned and gave me the opportunity to draw unseen

I hunt 3 different properties. I've gots some good stand locations for rut time that just produce year in and out. Then other stands get moved from year to year depending on food and travel patterns. Rut time spots are on the edge of thick doe bedrooms
Piebald is due to inbreeding, not a very good genetic benefit!

Well today is firearm season and the great equalizer comes out..I really don't need any equalizer I did quite well with the bow. It's always a bit sad when archery ends but I now have a buck tag again so onward! I'll be leaving the house in a short while and still have not decided on which property to hunt.Even though this is the archery forum I'll keep updating and hope to connect with one of the big guys
I usually hunt the rifle season with my bow in Wa.

Yes you can but it is really feudal once firearms starts. Today consisted of the of throwing a trespasser out of a stand 75 yds from me at 8:30 am,driving to next property to find out more people in woods around my set to then driving to 3rd property and seeing 1 doe...Did I mention I really hate gun season? The yahoo's will quit soon enough and I can actually start hunting deer again instead of orange jerks

Small 8pt 2 doe and piebald button buck... Oh yea and a hunter sitting on a bucket 75 yds behind me Touchy situation as he's a friend of neighbor where I park and yard I cut thru to get to my stand Told him he wasn't on property he was supposed to be on that he cut trees and saplings on someone else's property and that it wasn't very cool setting a stand 75 yds from me Did I mention I hate gun season
Yesterday afternoon was the 1st enjoyable hunt with no hunters around me.Saw 2 small buck a doe and a button buck. Fresh snow for this morning but no deer moving, but again enjoyable nobody around me.I will get back out this afternoon after I get some work caught up.
Dan, Do the folks around there knock off pretty much everything with 3" up top?
I think lots of guys have started to ease up on the small bucks, voluntarily. The past 5-7 years we seem to be seeing more and more 3.5+ year old bucks around. If a guy/gal wants to cork a young buck, have at it but plenty are passing IMO.
very warm here now 50 degrees this a.m.only 1 button buck this morning nothing moving .Went from alaska to Florida in less than 24 hours, snow is completely gone
2 doe yesterday but the property owner decided to walk his giant sheep dog thru the woods and was coming out just as I was entering.I asked knowingly "did you see any deer"? he said "yes a whole herd was running around the meadow" The "meadow" is a scrub golden rod field my stand over looks
Good morning,16 deer 3 buck a spike, 6 pt and a decent 8pt but he needs another year. Took a big doe with my handgun,Les Baer 1911 .45 and hand load,25 yd shot perfect placement and exit
Things are winding down now. This is the last weekend of firearms season and then muzzleloader comes in for 9 days.Im going on vacation the 13th so my season will be ending early. Expecting good things this weekend
Only able to get out twice with the muzzleloader, yesterday afternoon was my last hunt of the year saw 2 doe. Can't complain I had a great season, took a nice buck with the bow as well as a couple doe with the bow and pistol.Season runs till Tues day but I leave for a week in Costa Rica tomorrow at 6 AM. 25 degrees here and a foot of snow, but I guess I suffer 89 degrees sun and some Billfishing instead of hunting. Thanks for all who followed its been a long fun season! Till next Oct...
Great thread, guess I'll have to scroll down to to the fishing forum to follow your costa trip now!

Yup marlin fishing is like hunting gotta put your hours in but when it happens it worth all the hours. 300 lb blue hit the teaser late in the day did the bait and switch and he hammered the big cut bait. 35 minutes and we tagged and released him
