went to bps today to look at a couple scopes. leupold and redfield. checked out the redfield revolution 3-9x40 and liked it alot. perfect eye relief,nice plex reticle, light,clear. then i looked at the 4-12x40. imo it had about 5 inches of eye relief. the basspro guy agreed. does anyone have the 4-12 and feel its TOO much eye relief? i like the high end 12 power but i prefer the eye releif of the 3-9 i looked at

I have both�I have not noticed a problem, but I am noted in these parts for mounting my scope pretty far back�..


I thought the eye relief on the 4x12 was a bonus.

What was it like at 12x?

i turned the power ring up alot i cant remember if i turned it all the way to 12. but it was definitely over 4 inches. had to hav been 5 or 6 inches. i like eye relief but it had me thinking perhaps something was wrong with the scope. it was the accurange reticle model.

did some research. the 4-12 has 5inches of relief on the top end and 3.7 at 12x. the 3-9 has like 4.2-3.7.

Eye relief on my 3-9x40 stays pretty steady at 3 1/4", 4-12x40 goes 3 3/4" at 4x to 4 1/2" at 12x measured with a card and flashlight. I like both scopes.

the 4-12x, just like its leupold vx-1 counterpart, has a lot of eye relief at lower magnification, and a pretty broad range between the opposite poles. seems to have too much at the lower end ...

I've got a few scopes that are higher priced and maybe glass-wise a little better than the Revolution 3-9X40 plex that I have on my Hawkeye All-weather 7-08, but none that are more user friendly and easier to get behind. The Rev. is one of the main reasons that this gun quickly became my go-to rifle. One of the places I've been hunting has some stands that are basically a wooden ladder with a 20X24" seat at the top and the generous eye relief and overall forgiving nature of the Revolution is a real plus when you're twisted up trying to get a shot other than straight ahead of you. I plan to put them on at least two more rifles.

thanks john i think that 3-9x40 redfield is what im going to go with. lookn thro it it was very easy to get behin. love the eyebox and to me the 4plex reticle looked like it would be visible enough in lowlight unlike most other plex reticles ive looked through.

has anyone compared them to a leupold vx2? just checking them out at the store i preferred the redfield. i liked the reticle a little better. seemed more like the conquest plex whereas the vx-2 plex seemed a little thinner

"Too much eye relief" is a concept I have a hard time comprehending. Not that I'm flaming you guys, I just have never experienced it with any regular scope...

well. ive read and watched some videos where guys that had the 4-12 had to use extensions on the mounts that push the scope more forward to get the proper eye relief

I put a 3-9x40 revolution on my dad's 8mm gibbs for him a few years ago. It has been a very nice scope, easy to get behind and no issues. I also had a 2-7 for a while, broke it(my fault) and Leupold had it repaired and back in under 3 weeks from the time I shipped it to them.

the issue to me with the 4-12 is the range of eye relief. if you mount it where its right at higher magnification, it aint gonna be right at lower magnification

thats why i think im just gonna go with the 3-9. i usually like a little higher magnification but o well

Ain't no such thing as too much eye relief. Set it where you like it at the lowest magnification. That is where the scope should be set 99% of the time and where it will be when you have to make a fast shot.

If you have to slide your cheek up the stock a fraction of an inch when on higher magnification it is OK. Those are the shots where you have plenty of time to set up before pulling the trigger.

I found the Zeiss Terra 2-7 to have too much eye relief at low power, on a bolt gun set up to be functional at high power. I never much noticed the problem with the 4-12 Revolution, set up similarly on a mid weight Mauser.
