All:

I have been looking around for a nice Marlin Mountie for my son, however, it would seem that I have misjudged the market, but not sure. Hence the question.

I would like to find a nice (lets say 90%) all original example. I was thinking this would be roughly a $600 item. My limited experience thus far would suggest that this is maybe around a $750 rifle. Basically, I was wondering what you folks feel is current market price for such a Marlin.

Thanks for any thoughts and opinions!

Older ones seem to bring more money that the newer ones, around here $600-700 is not uncommon.

Good luck in your search for one, there is one for sale on armslist not to far from me, check out the link, if your really interested I could check it out for you.

If you want a collector in 90% or better and an older one at that then you might have to go that amount. However if you are like me and buy shooters then you should be able to pick one up in your price range. For 700.00 it better be 95% or better for me. Give me a nice used but not abused one in decent condition anytime.

I think you have come to an accurate conclusion. I found a shooter not nearly a 90% gun for $500 and jumped on it. Good luck with your search.

It is, it was missing a front sight, the bluing was thin, and the wood wasn't great. The action is solid and smooth, which is why I bought it. I am going to tear it apart and turn it into something similar to this:

Thanks for the comments guys. It is all very helpful.

I have a line on a nice one, about in the 95% range, for $600. If I can seal the deal I will post some pictures on here.

One thing about guns, you never know whats going to pop up or where. I bought one (1969 Mountie) from the original owner a couple of years ago, 99% with the hang tags but no box. He said he bought it off the rack at the hardware store brand new and didn't get a box. Here's the way I found it. While standing in line waiting to get in the local gun show I looked back in the line and a guy was holding what looked to be a Mountie. I went back and asked if he brought it to sell, yes he did and he would like $350 for it. I asked if he could consider $300? He said not before he even gets inside so I gave him 350. Took it home, wiped it down and put it in the safe with the hang tags. I've never shot it and probably won't. It seems that when ever I make A promise to the wife I won't buy anything is when the stuff jumps out of the weeds and I cave in.Can't believe she's put up with me for 46yrs.

I lucked into one a couple of years ago. Had gone with a friend to the shop of a very old gunsmith and it was sitting on a rack...with the original 1964 vintage Marlin marked scope...for $350.00. The smith said the gun was brought in by one of his long time customers who was 94 and bought the gun brand new.

That was my third Mountie and ended up selling it for $650 a year later and bought a 60s vintage Carbine instead.

But as indicated above, anything under $600 for one in nice shape is a bargain.
