Found an intriguing Model 70 at a local shop earlier this week and decided I just had to bring it home.
It's a push-feed Model 70, 1990-91 by the serial number, chambered in 7STW. The barrel is 26" long, stainless steel; the action is chrome moly, and it has a Jewell trigger. The barrel is marked "Sporting Sharpshooter" on the right side, and "Winchester Model 70 7mm STW New Haven Connecticut" on the left side. The barrel has two proof marks just ahead of the action, a WW proofmark, and another that I don't recognize.
The action is pillar bedded into a McMillan Supergrade pattern stock, painted grey. The action is full length bedded, as is the bottom metal, and the bottom metal is the factory three piece unit, but it only has two action bolts. The stock is marked with the rifle's serial number.
From my quick and dirty research I think this is one of the first 7mm STW's built in the Winchester custom shop in the early 90's. The first run of push-feeds had McMillan stocks while the later Model 70 Classic Custom Sharpshooter II's had HS Precision stocks.
Anybody have one of these rifles? Any thoughts on shooting and loading the 7mm STW?
No pics yet, but I'll have some up next week. I'm looking forward to working with it; I have no need for a Big 7, but the price out the door was less than the cost of a Jewell trigger, so I couldn't pass it up
