I have been looking at these for a while (amongst others!). I bought it off gunbroker from a vendor with a lot of sales history at a reasonable price and a good recurring stock of these .45-70's. Called them tonight on the way home and asked them to look the rifle over before shipping. They did! Answer was GTG. Can't wait to get it. I'll post some more pics when I get it, if anybody's interested. Cheers!

I picked up 40 rds. of Winchester Super-X 300 gr JHP today at BassPro, mainly because I could, and because I wanted the Win brass, too. Received the drop-in parts in the mail from Midway: Wild West Happy Trigger, Wild West 1-piece stainless ejector, Red anodized aircraft aluminum magazine follower, and Wolff hammer spring. Scope is in the mail, coming in 3 days. Things are starting to come together!

Sounds like you know all the critical pieces to get.
What scope? I have the Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5X20 on mine(a Guide gun).
I went through the "earth-shaker" load phase, now I've gotten to where I like something like a 300 grain bullet at around 1600 to 1900 fps just fine. They kill deer graveyard dead, and last time I looked, the bear weren't too oversized, either. No need for 435 grain bullets at 1800+ fps.

Vic, thanks for the response. I'm planning to reload for this rifle, so each component's expense comes into play.
I picked up a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40. I'm 60+ now and eyesight isn't what it was. I planning on mounting it in Talley silver low's (s930336), as long as these will clear the XS ghost ring rear sight. Waiting on winchester88 to let me know if I'm good to go on that setup. NOT mounting scout style.

I hear ya!
I've got a receiver sight setup for mine, but like the low-power scope. I cannot even begin to see a buckhorn rear sight. It's just a blob now.
So, it was receiver sight or scope, either of which I can use, and I prefer the extra few minutes the scope gives me.

Talked to Marlin and Talley. Looks like I'm going to have to go with the Lightweight mediums. The guys at Marlin didn't think the lows would clear the rear peep sight, which is .501". I guess I could go with a straight ring set up but I like the one piece toughness of the Light weights.

I did the drop-in parts you used. But with a forward mount for the scope. Going to shorten the LOP with a good buttpad in place. I have to midgetize my rifles with a 12 3/4" LOP. I want to change the front and rear sights with protective winged models from XS. I'm a klutz and need armored sights. I would like a larger lever loop but the WWG model looks stupidly excessive. YMMV
