The early ones were made by Brown Precision..., the later ones were made by McMillan... And the last incarnation of them were made by Bell & Carlson, I believe... Hope this helps... I have no way of explaining how to tell which...

Generally the Brown stock 1's have a blued barreled action & engine turned bolt, the McMillian have all mat finished metal. When Photobucket comes back up I'll post a picture of both side by side.

If you're looking for a new KS stock, Mcmillan will build you one. Their 700 KS mold is only for a right hand, long action, ADL setup. Edit: forgot Mcmillan does a lefty version as well. Long Action ADL only.
Mcmillan also sells the Model Seven KS stock, which I believe can be inletted for a 700 short action, but don't quote me on that.

Only difference being the new McM KS is the KS pattern and not actually made using Kevlar as the original ones were..

Right. But now a guy can get an Edge fill KS and lose even more weight. Or go with a swirly and be Uber-cool.

Outside of a Dakota 76 stock & a couple of similar custom rifles, the KS design feels better to me than anything else I've ever seen. I like open grips & slim forends & the KS has that.........the B&C Ti stocks would be nearly as good if the grip was smaller in diameter. KS Cerrokoted & webbed. MM

My .338 Mtn Rifle was a McMillan.
I had one inletted for my Stevens 200 .338-06 as well.
The Remington style stocks are easily adapted to the round Savage/Stephens actions.

Brown Precision will still make one for you too, you just have to call them (at least they would have about two years ago when I asked). You can get it in full Kevlar if you want.

Took it out of the stock. It is a McMillan. Jeez, that stock weighs nothing. Now I've just got to replace the paint.

Serious question...
Outside of the better quality stock, what else is special about them? Are they assembled better? Trued up? What else is going on that drives their price up.

I believe they are assembled in the custom shop. Wish they were more common north of the border, especially in standard calibers!

The KS finish is tough & I wouldn't try to take it all off.
Just a very light, non-aggressive grit blast to freshen the surface & then re-finish however you choose.
If you try to get that finish off with strippers or lacquer thinner, you'll likely end up with a mess & then you'll have a lot of work to completely strip it all off.
YMMV
