elkhunternm,
I own one of the JOC .270's, and they're not just made to look good. Dunno what brand of barrel Winchester put on 'em, but every one I've heard of shoots VERY well, including mine. The very first 3-shot group it fired at 100 yards was .40", with Norma 150-grain Oryx factory load. Handloads with all sorts of bullets have shot well under an inch. Of course, part of the reason they shoot so well is the stock is very precisely epoxy-bedded and the barrel free-floated.
I don't intend to rebarrel mine to 7x57, but then I already have a similar 7x57 on a Montana 1999 action (a sort of cross between the Model 70 and 98 Mauser), with a Featherweight contour Montana barrel, in one of Kilimanjaro's fancy-wood laminated stocks that don't look laminated. Oh, and a 6.5x55 on an FN commercial action, with a Lilja 1-8 twist barrel and a New Zealand walnut stock. It doesn't hurt to have that ballistic category well-filled....

I was at the range yesterday with a quartet of 270's.
I'll be danged if all of them shot sub MOA. 110gr NAB, 130gr TSX, TTSX, GMX.
A couple of 700's, one a lightweight. A pre 64 and a classic FWT.
I have one of the above mentioned JOC's. Have not decided if I am going to shoot it. I figured the stock alone is pretty close to the price of admission if you have ever looked at stock blanks and the price to turn one into an actual stock.
The only thing I do not prefer is the MOA trigger, and JOC name on the trigger guard. But it is beautiful, and I like the way it feels in hand.

That's not what they say to me. I hear "let's go hunting".
They speak of sheep, elk, moose, interior grizzly, African plains game, especially kudu. Desert hunting for Coues, coyotes & jackrabbits. Whitetail, Mule deer and Pronghorn.

So...let me get this straight. If I take a 270 case, shorten it so it holds less powder, neck it up .007 thou, and make it go slower, it gets "better"? Did I get that right?

I got nothing against a 7 Mouser, but the two-seven-tee is uber. I use Mine when visiting Montana for all things in season.

Having had both, I think they are more alike than dissimilar, one tilting a bit toward a tad more bullet weight, the other toward a tad more velocity, and I would hunt either one....and have.Nothing I ever shot with either one would know or understand that it was killed with something a bit more, or less, "just so". I trust, that you don't really believe that "just so" nonsense.....right?

I think it all comes down to whether one prefers to hunt with a feminine cartridge or a man's cartridge. Do you 7x57 owners have to rotate your 7x57 out one week every month?

Speer used to make a .277" 170 gr round nose way back in the day. IIRC My granddad used them on deer. As far as the leopard print thongs, well they look better on the ladies butts.

I have heard that the 270 is gay!
When I looked at the pic of the Jack O'Conner tribute I got me a funny tingling feeling.
That doesn't mean I'm gay does it?
I'm really confused right now!

That doesn't mean I'm gay does it?
I'm really confused right now!
Shod Don't worry there is no single "gay" rifle cartridge...there are combinations that are suspect...I hear that people that own both 7x57's and .223ai's tend to drink tea with raised pinky's and wear leopard print thongs, you be the judge...

Having compiled the stats I conclude that .270 groupies doth protest too much. I conclude that 7 mouser groupies get a nose bleed every 28 days.

Hello Bob,
thank you for taking the time to even answer my nonsense above.
You are quite correct - my comments were TIC.
Its an old saw, that one. Someone tries to rile up the Poobah by mentioning the .270 Winchester - he/she will then be attested to have "caught the gay". While any real man would only consider the 7x57. Instant recognition of your panache, savoir faire, manhood in general...
The core of the joke is - just like you point out, the "closeness" of the two.
6,5x55 SE vs. 260 Rem, anyone?
Also - and put in for just that reason, I realize, that leaving you to your own devices, sees you well situated and content, resting on a mountain of experience - a man not only grazed with such, but also willing and able to learn from it.
Best wishes.
And this post was not TIC.

elkhnternm, If you buy the 270, pretty soon you will tripping all your other similar rifles due to the obvious superiority and simplicity and functionality of the 270. You will be happy as your life is simplified, your wife will be happy as you were able to pare down your collection.

Having compiled the stats I conclude that .270 groupies doth protest too much. Naw, just have keep reality in check. 7x57 owners just have to keep talking themselves up. When you can't run with the big dogs, you just make more noise. Come up with romantic notions and fancy feelings to justify their cartridge choice.

I have a 270 and have no problem with leopard print thongs.

CRS,if I do get the Tribute .270 it'll be my fourth .270 in the gunsafe. That's a good start. Need a lightweight one, pre-64, supergrade, FWT, classic, FN, tribute rifles, and various itinerations of each in wood/blue/stainless/wood, cerakote/wood, cerakote synthetic, etc. One as a donor for kids, one as a donor for adults.

Do you have a large wrist watch too? No large wristwatch, tend to use the sun when I am out in the woods though. What do they say? you can lead a horse 7x57 user to water to the truth, but you can not make them drink see the obvious.

Lets see, have the Super Grade, bought it in late 1991 early 1992. The Classic is a .270 Wby. Have the FN Mauser .270. Would like a Pre '64 FWT to go with my Pre '64 FWT .30-06. So many .270's so little money.

I have a 270 and have no problem with leopard print thongs. I would expect nothing less from a 270 poster. A 7x57 poster would have us all washing our eyes with bleach. As the thongs they seem to post are on gentlemen, and less than desirables. And they call us gay? They are a complicated bunch.

That was being polite to some of the "women" they post in thongs. You know, the kind you need 5 lbs of bacon to bait and a 5 lb bag of flour. If your into that sort of thing.

Might as well rest, you're probably tired from lugging around those oversized, underpowered 7x57 rounds through the woods...

Hurrah, a heavy .270! Here's my JOC tribute 7mm/08... I can like that rig a lot. I call dibs when you're ready to sell it.

Where do .270 Shooters live? In Gaynsville... Ready it is hard from a distance, sometimes , to tell the barbs from the TIC posts....I am still not good at it. Tom(Ingwe) and I do some back and forth banter on the 270 and the 7x57 for chuckles and to get a rise ot of each other. In truth, I am very fond of the 270....and the 280...and the 7x57...and the 30/06...and the 7/08.....anything really in that power range.I'll gladly hunt with any of them.
The 280 Remington is overbore.

This is definitely all in good fun. After having owned, 25's, 6.5's, 7mm's, and 30's. All good cartridges in their own right. I will disagree with BobinNH in the fact that I will not gladly hunt with any of them as I still prefer a 270. There is simply a comfort level that has developed over the last 30+ years. With that being said, the only other cartridge I would consider. IF I had to go back and do it all over again would be the 280 Remington. Funny enough, I have never owned one. Reason: I already have a 270. I simply love the fact that I can load 85gr TSX's to 180gr Woodleigh's. Crank it up to max potential or use moderate to reduced loads with good effect. You can say the same thing about a multitude of other cartridges, but the simple fact remains that I have been there, done that with a whole pile of 270 rifles.

I think I like the .270 better with a 26" barrel, so I don't especially want a 22", M70 or otherwise.
But for the .270 in general, it's hard to knock five shots at deer & five bang flops. I'm going to hunt a .25-06 this year, one of Dad's old rifles, but will have my #1 .270 along for backup.
