Does or has any lever mfg done a 480 Ruger in a lever action. Used as a dark woods short range (150-200) yd. gun it would be neat if done in action/clone of winnie 92. That is if the action would be long enough for 400 gr. bullets with out having to stuff it to far down into the case.
Should be able to do 1800-2000 fps. What do you think? I believe you could get the energy of the 454 Casull with out the high pressure's of the 454.
Thanks for your time. Cheers NC.

I believe Rossi made some in 480 Ruger. Can't think what other company it may have been, but I almost sprang for one several years ago at a gunshow. Dealer had one NIB with 40 or 60 rounds of Hornady factory loads for , AIC, $400. He wasn't at his table when I came through, and wound up getting a Ruger 77/44 from another seller. I think the Rossi model number is/was M92. Hope this helps.

Thank you sir I never seen the Rossi/Taurus listed with 480 Ruger.
I am thinking it wouldn't be quite a brutal as the 454 which I under stand gets your attention when touching off the top/hot 454 Casull rounds. Cheers NC

There was a guy (McPhearson) that wrote about converting a lever to 475 Linebaugh...can't remember if it was an '92 or the Marlin 1894.

Yes Rossi made one, and I know someone who has one. I've never had a chance to shoot it though.

No problem shooting 400 gr bullets, but your velocity estimates are +p+++ 1500 fps is a more reasonable velocity. BTW the 480 is not a exactly a low pressure round with a max pressure of 48,000 psi. Yes, not as high as a 454, but much higher than the 44 mag.

Thanks for the input I was looking at some reloading data and that is where I got some idea of velocity in a rifle.
Data was a 400 gr cast(lee) mold 7.5 inch barrel and 22 grs. H-110 for 1365fps.I was thinking it would be 400 faster in a 20 inch barrel, but I guess not: not too familiar with the heavy stuff. Thanks. Cheers NC
It is my understanding that if you have a unit that handles the 475 that you can shoot the 480 in same gun? Am I correct?

Don't know where you got data showing a 400 gr cast bullet going 1365 from a 7 1/2" barrel, but having shot several thousand 400 gr cast rounds through a 7 1/2" revolver I'll say 1200 fps +/- is a realistic velocity with 21-22 gr of H-110, and some people are only getting 1100 fps with those loads in revolvers. If you load somewhere around 25 gr of H-110 you might see 1350 fps in a revolver, but I'd wager you'd be running 45,000 psi +.

I know in theory getting rid of the barrel/cylinder gap and adding barrel length should gain you about 400 fps, but from what I've heard the 480 doesn't make tremendous gains in a rifle. So I consider 400 gr @ 1500 fps realistic from the 480 in a lever gun, and that's nothing to sneeze at.

Yes, a 475 linebaugh will feed and fire 480 ammo, basically like running a 44 sp in a 44 mag. But on the flip side if you have a bullet mold designed for a 480 revolver, you can load ammo to the same OAL as a 475 linebaugh and hence have the same powder capacity. Those rounds won't feed through a 480 lever gun.

275 gr swc, 310 gr lfn, 400 xlfn, 460 wfn. The 460 was too much of a good thing, I think the 400 gr @ 1200 fps is the sweet spot with the 480.

I have one in stainless and 20"bbl. I load a 410 cast performance wfn with 20gr of H-110 and get in the 1300fps range. It is a very light fun rifle.

Thank you Sir for helping with my education and to think this all started when I thought the 480 would not be as brutal as the 454 Casull and from what you & Pak have said it probably is easier on the body.
Pak what rifle are you shooting the 480 in? Thanks to everyone who have help broaden my knowledge. Cheers NC

P.S. 458Lott thank you for the bullet and cartridge pictures.

Winchester advertised the 94 in .480 back in the late '90s or early 2000s and Marlin advertised a .475 Linebaugh a short time later, but neither ever hit production. I hate it when they do that sh*t! As an admitted gun snob, the Brazilian made Puma never blew my skirt up, but after they discontinued them, I kind of got the itch for one. I'll find a used one some day...
