If the new Sakos are as good as the the pre-Beretta Sakos -I have no reason to think that they aren't- that's the way I'd go. But they're upwards of 2 grand. The most accurate rifle I have fired is a Sako, which is why I just ought another.

Cartridge will depend upon intended big game. The 7MM Rem Mag is the largest cartridge I go with. If you can't kill it with a 7MM Rem Mag, you ain't gonna kill it with a .300 Win Mag.

My recommendation after hunting all over the Rockies would be .280 Rem, then '06, then the 7MM Rem Mag. .270 Win.

I own a 7MM Rem Mag and a .270 Win. I have utmost respect for the '06. It is the greatest cartridge ever designed for all North American big game hunting in terms of efficacy. The .280 Rem is the best cartridge ever invented for all North American big game. The .300 Win mag is a big cartridge, but it won't kill any deader than the 7MM Rem Mag with the latter having edges in distance and penetration due to sectional densities of .284 caliber bullets. Shooting a .300 Win Mag from benches will make you wish you had bought a .280 Rem, which will kill big game just as dead.

Gitem,
Get that 7mm-08. It will rapidly become your favorite. And the Super Grade over the Remington. And at least look at an 84M.......

Super grade. And since it's mostly for PA deer hunting, and you say you don't need a magnum, 270 is the obvious choice. Sounds like you have answered your own question.

John,I just weighed both of my Super Grades, here are the results.

1) .270 Win with a Leupold 3-9x,Burris 2-piece bases & rings. 9lbs 6ozs. 24" barrel

2) .338 Win mag Leupold 2-7x Leupold 2-piece bases & rings. 8lbs 14ozs. 24" barrel

Just for schits and giggles I weighed the FN Mauser .270. It has a Leupold 3-9x Weaver 2-piece bases & rings 9lbs 3ozs. 22" barrel

Putting the SG .270 win to the shoulder, the balance is great,it don't feel like it's almost 9.5lbs.

Take it for what you paid for the info. wink

The BDL was actually discontinued several years ago and brought back in limited numbers and loadings. If I had to have a Remington it would be the CDL.

A 9 lb rifle might not bother you, until you carry a 7 lb rifle. It is not a matter of what you CAN do, but what you CHOOSE to do. I CAN carry a 9-10 lb rifle, but after using some that weigh 6-7.5 lbs have no intention of going back.

Winchester or Kimber all the way for me. If Kimber I'd go short action and I don't think caliber matters all that much. Bullet choices will make more difference than caliber. If Winchester, not the Supergrade. Too heavy, I'd be looking at the Featherweight in any of the standard long or short action calibers.

Of the 3 choices you listed, 300 WSM. I have several rifles in 308 and 30-06. I don't really need a magnum round either, but ran across a killer deal on a SS Classic a few years ago in 300 WSM and have grown to respect the round. It has been a 4 year process, doing a little at a time, but it is finished. It weighs 7.5 lbs as it sets and I have $1050 invested in the rifle, optics and Edge stock.

I'm not selling my 30-06 rifles, and if I had a 300 WM I liked wouldn't sell it either, but if advising a new shooter today would tell them to forget 30-06 and 300 WM and just get the 300 WSM instead. You get 99% of a 300 WM's performance in a 308 size package with recoil almost exactly the same as hot 30-06 loads. Anyone who can tolerate 30-06 recoil will never notice the difference with 300 WSM,

while the CDL is an atractive rifle it is 300$ less than a super grade. not comparable. the kimber with a french walnut stock is light and good looking and similar price. i would also consider a sako L61r deluxe . not as light as the kimber but still in the same price range.

Gitem, I'm a 270 fan and do not own a 7/08.

However, I have always deeply admired the 7/08.

I can't see where there is anything the 270 can do that a 7/08 couldn't do also. I bet a 7/08 shooting a 120 tsx would be a deadly combo.

Well, the supergrade 7-08 was a shot show special, so that's out of the question.

Next problem is my dealer's suppliers are out of stock on all butbthe synthetic stocked Winchesters.

However,he has a CZ 550 in stoxk with a decent price. And he also has a NIb 700 mountain rifle in 280

You'll end up kicking yourself in the ass real hard if you do either of these.

The CZ is a little on the heavy side, and the 700.....well, its a remmy. I'd hold out and get what you want

My wife has a Kimber 84M in 7mm-08 and it's a super nice rifle and very light, probably a little over 6lbs all up.

Don't get me wrong, I love Winchesters but those Kimbers are some super nice rifles.

My next hunting rifle will be a Kimber Montana in 7mm-08 and used mostly for sheep hunting.

The problem is. There are no local Kimber dealers except big box stores.

Can't you buy one from a dealer in another town/state and have it shipped to your ffl?

Yea, but why do I wanna pay a higher price when I get guns from my delaer for 50 bicks above his cost

A 270 WSM in a package that lite might be a bit unpleasant to shoot. If I was leaning toward a magnum I think I'd lean more toward a little heavier rifle like a CZ.

I know its different strokes for different folks and what works for one may be entirely different for another. Just throwing out ideas to consider.

Now that Montana in 7/08 would be as close to perfect as it gets for someone like myself.

A 120 tax and I'd be set for a nice mountain excursion where my average shot is not much over 300 yds.

A 162 amax and I'm good for open areas that may require a 600 yds shot.

I wouldn't hesitate to use either scenario for elk sized game.
