24 hour campfire members blackdogsrule & myself just returned from a 2 week hunt with Kambako Safaris in Northern Mozambique. We hunted Block B abuting the 10 million acre Niassa Reserve. We had originally booked a Cape Buffalo and plains game hunt. Just before our departure Kambako called us and said they had 2 leopards still available on quota. Kambako offered us an additional PH and his 2 man crew at no charge designated to do nothing but the baiting & checking of baits while we were hunting buff & plains game. They reported their progress and findings to us each evening back at camp so we could make plans to build & sit in blinds when it was the right time. They also offered us the leopard upgrade at a price that was just too good to pass up. We knew it was a risk but after talking to several hunters who had hunted with Kambako before we decided it was a risk worth taking. We figured we had a reasonable chance of one of us harvesting a leopard. It was a long shot that we might both pull it off.

To say the hunt was a spectacular success would be quite the understatement. Kambako was 1st class in every way. The PHs we hunted with were absolutely the best hunters & guides I have had the pleasure of hunting with anywhere.

The country was wild, free, harsh, and spectacular. The hunting was challenging and not easy by any means which we liked. The PHs & the trackers worked their azzes off trying to put us on game from sun up to sundown every day. It was real hunting in real Africa.

I'll post a few pics and add comments as I can. Thanks, 163bc [Linked Image]

We both took spectacular leopards at last light on the last day of our hunt. We both threw up blinds with our PHs on the last afternoon on fresh intel from the baiting PH who had seen big tracks at baits in 2 different areas. The 2 baits that had been hit were about 25-40 miles apart. Blackdogs took the one closest to where he was hunting and I took the one closest to where I was with my PH. It was a last ditch try after coming up dry for 2 weeks. We both shot at last light. It was kinda like scoring a touchdown for the win with no time left on the clock from 80 yards away. It touched off quite a celebration in camp and was the hunting thrill of a lifetime for 2 old hunting buddies.

Thanks so much Sam for taking the time to post these pics. Excellent job and it truly was a spectacular hunt. We are truly blessed that we got to share such an experience like that together. We have hunted together for many years but I don't think we will ever top this one. I for one won't even try.

Great pictures! Looks like y'all had a great time as well.

Last night I finished Capstick's book about Wally Johnson. The book ends in late 1989 with Johnson saying that Mozambique was basically dead as a hunting destination. What a difference 25 or 30 years makes!

Well, the world that Wally Johnson knew is dead and gone, but fortunately, we don't know the difference. That looks like they had a great safari!

Absolutely!

Actually, I think Johnson would be delighted. His concern was that the combination of the political revolution of the 80s, combined with the famine that followed, would decimate game populations. These pics would warm his heart, I'm sure.

I'd love to see more pics if there are any.

When I got out of college the first thing I did was buy a new 1983 Land Cruiser wagon - the 4 door. I got it entirely loaded with all the options available, which at the time was a radio and air conditioner! I got really stupid in the late 90s and gave it to a friend of mine. I regret that still today.

Hey Ingwe, what are you going to sell to help fund this experience? You know you don't need that decrepit old Ingwe Special anymore.

Absolutely!

I just finished Captick's book about Wally Johnson, PH in Mozambique a few decades ago. He (Johnson) tells the tale of taking a German/Austrian(?) lady hunting and she downed not one but two Cape Buffalo with, as he put it, a "pipsqueak" 7x57. One shot each. She obviously knew how to use her 'big' rifle as well.

Can you tell me the name of that book please? Thanks, Sam

"The Last Ivory Hunter: The Saga of Wally Johnson" Great book, although it ends on a pretty down note since Johnson didn't live long enough to see Mozambique's hunting tradition revive.

"An archer sees how far he can be from a target and still hit it, a bowhunter sees how close he can get before he shoots." It is certainly easy to use that same line of thinking with firearms. -- Unknown

Fantastic,man!

That leopard double at last light on your last night is utterly amazing. The kudu and waterbuck are beauties, as well.

Good on you both. Spectacular hunt and pics.

Isaac, Good to hear from you again. I believe we both took Malarone. It was one pill a day for a couple days before, during and a week after we returned. I had no issues with it. Went to a travel clinic in Centreville for most of the shots and prescriptions. Piece o cake.

Blackdogsrules rifle is a Winchester Custom shop M-70 in 375 H&H. it is a beautiful rifle with exceptional wood. Very accurate too. Mine is a Winchester Safari Express re-stocked in a McMillan McWoody. Both rifles shoot at the exact same POI with Barnes 300 TSX & Northfork 300 grain solids. 163bc
