I sometimes shoot 600yd competition, including 600 yd egg shoots, with a 308.

But hunt with a very different 308. Both are extremely accurate, yet totally different........

I do I am hunting with a CORE 30 LR TAC 18" barrel, LEUPOLD M4 2.5x8 mr tac shoots 165 accubonds with 45 grns RL 15 into 1/2" five shot groups at 100 yards. First year with this one but I have killed bear and dear with my heavy rem 700 with great results. But I figure 600 is really long for 308.

Not necessarily, and it depends on what you mean by "long range." I have an accurate .308 that I'll use for pronghorn in the next week or so, I wouldn't hesitate to take a 600 yard shot if the conditions are right. 600 is my personal limit.

Scenarshooter has a ton of photos of big elk that he's been in on that were killed with a .308 at good distances. He doesn't post a lot here any more.

Mid ranges usually. Normally keep it mid 6s and under, with most shots in the 4-5 range.

600 is realistic for the 308. It obviously can be pushed much farther especially with a spotter, however 600 is about where I start wanting more.

If long range is your goal with a 308 play with 185gr Juggernauts and 2000MR.

I've shot a good amount of game in the 500 range and am totally comfortable with the accuracy and performance.

My most used bullet has been the super accurate 165 grain Sierra hollow point Game King pushed by Varget. That being said, the BC sucks on this bullet and it really starts to get blown around. I'm switching to 155 grain Lapua Scenars exclusively once I use up the last of the hpbt game kings.

As a note the Sierra hollow point Game Kings have done a stellar job on elk too.

600 is just my limit. I shoot 6.5x284 or 264 wm to 1000 .past that I shoot a 338. not saying a 308 will not punch paper at 1300 I know it will. I just do not think it has the foot pound to do a good job on game past 600 out of a 18" barrel my personal limit. I know a 24 or 26" with 155 will go to 750 or 800 yard but my max is 600 .

Lol, no kidding. I'd better not say how many elk (and mule deer) have been dumped with 175 grain Sierra match kings from a precision rifle......

Last year's cow stepped out from the herd and got an SMK in the ear at a pretty fair poke to avoid hitting two.

Pure stunts!!

May 1997 issue of Precision Shooting, in an ad for Krieger Barrels, Inc. that showed an actual-size copy of a 20-shot group shot at 800 yards by Bart Bobbitt with his Krieger Barrelled PALMA rifle." Now this group has a .942" mean radius, with an extreme spread of 3.325".

On May 10, 1997 on a usenet gun forum, rec.guns, Bart explained, "I used a .308 Win. with Sierra's 155-gr. Palma bullet with 45.3gr. of IMR4895 and RWS Primers in full-length sized WCC60 match cases. Had a 20X scope on the English Paramount action and shot prone with a bag under my front hand to steady the rifle. It was about 6AM in dead-calm wind conditions.

A painting of a picture of Bart is the NRA icon for accuracy.

Bart says that David Tubb is the best person at wind doping he has ever seen.

--------------------------------
I have a 308 reamer, more than my weight in 308 brass, and a dozen 308 rifles.
I have never had the accuracy with a 308 that would have me shooting at deer beyond 400 yards.
But with a 7mmRM loaded hot [not BS 7mmRM published loads] I can hunt out to 500 yards.
I am not a Bobbitt nor a Tubb, so I need every advantage I can get, so I do not hunt with a .308.

And since May 10, 1997, I have tried to shoot on low wind days.

Do you guys think @ 500-600 yds. a 7MM08 has an advantage over the 308?

With good bullets- of course. 162 AMAX's at 2,750-2,850fps do nice things.

For the record, I have 2 308s and have put 1000s of rounds down them. And a couple 7-08s as well.

That said, as for .308s, you need to step up to a 208gr A-max to equal the BC of a 162gr. 7mm A-max.

Nuff said.....

have you ever tried the 168 grain ballistic tip. I'm launching them at 2750 and getting good accuracy. How far is that set up good for?
