"...part of Montana is covered in six feet of snow a third of the year"?

NW Montana (i.e., Glacier NP) is covered between Labor Day and Mid-June!. I've shoveled literally tons of snow in June in Glacier.

Put a tag in your pocket. You'll never see any of 'em.

bigwhoop,

Apparently nobody has answered your question about Montana elk harvest success rates.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Department apparently hasn't issued a report on that since the 2008 season, possibly because wolves now have a higher elk-hunting success rate. But in 2008 21% of resident hunters filled their elk tags. That includes ALL tags, included antlerless.

In 2008 non-residents filled 25% of their elk tags. Some say this is because a high percentage of non-residents hire guides, so obtain access to better elk country, whether remote public land or private ranches. I would suggest that it may be due to non-residents being smarter, since they're obviously smart enough not to live here.

Thanks Mule Deer. I am just starting up the "research department" when the time comes to get the hell out of here and move west. Only need one elk a year, nothing else. Would like to try trout fishing and never shot a prairie dog. We'll see.

Read an interesting article in Varmint Hunter about the Hi-Line area of MT and the abundance of gophers.

That sounds like a fun trip to make.

Ahhh, Montana. Where being "On the lamb" has a completely different meaning. But seriously, I love the place and it's been too long since I've been there.

Montana has one of four hospitals is the US qualified to handle EBOLA cases. I don't think you want to come here. It's going to be ground zero in the near future -- and the hunting and fishing suck anyway.

bigwhoop,

Glad to help. One thing about success rates, especially on elk: Many residents buy an elk tag just in case they run into one while hunting deer, but serious elk hunters have a much higher success rate. My wife and I aren't nearly as serious about killing elk as some other people, but manage to get one about every other year. In the other years we're pretty happy to still have elk meat in the freezer, because we always kill some pronghorn and deer each year.

Trout fishing and prairie dog shooting are both a lot of fun, but mostly take place at opposite ends of the state, and Montana is about a 700-mile drive, east to west. Which is one reason I've lived somewhere around the center of the state for almost 30 years now.
