What is the serial number?
Would factory ledger contain an entry regarding work/stamp?

Serial is 54749 and I'm not sure if it would tell anything or not.

The one that we've seen with a letter shows no information about possible work (as Rick says above).

"Someone along the line took 4 inches off the barrel "

It is obvious that the barrel has been cut? If it is a round barrel it could be a Short Rifle. It was not uncommon for the early SR's to have crescent butts.

The octagon barrel measures 22 inches. Whoever did the work did a nice job and looks to have been done long long ago. Wasn't a hack job with a hacksaw and the sights were put in nicely too with no added marks.

Less likely to be original if it is an octagon...thought they were produced.

Why do you think it's been cut?
Is it just because it's 22"??

I just figured it should have a 26 inch barrel other than that no reason just haven't seen one with a 22 inch.

Trapper, in the grand scheme of things it's more likely to have been cut than be a special order 22" barrel....

But don't rule the 22" special order out without some evidence.

It will hopefully tell you the configuration when originally shipped. 26" or 22".

I have 14,315 in 303 with a 22" octago barrel. On the barrel it is stamped with an S in a circle. It is also stamped with an "M" like the early Marlin made barrels. Factory letter says 14,316 is noted as a 22" barrel, not 14315. Has anyone else seen an early B with 22" octagon barrel stamped with "M". Were they still using up Marlin barrels in 1901 ?
