Vern,

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but after loading for the 9.3x62 for over a dozen years I suspect the reason the load shot well is the cartridge is one of those that shoots about any load well!

With 250's it sure isn't a short-range-only round....

I always thought it blasphemous to use anything other than a round nose in a 9,3...

JB & Vern,

What velocities are you getting with those 250gr bullets?

Thanks,

That'll work!

In my rifle around 2650 fps.

Thanks for the 9.3 traffic....you learn a lot every day...If anybody is sitting on the old Norma 286gr. Plastic Points PM me....those old imitation BT's tested great on different media and seemed to fill a void for critters just under moose size....not 600lbs....not 200lbs....just between...regards...bearit...

bearit,

Until I discovered the Matrix bullet made here in Canada, I put quite a few tons of moose, caribou, and bear in the freezer using the 286gr Norma Plastic Point Dual Core bullets at around 2400 fps.

They work, but then everything seems to work at that velocity. smile

Yeah, the 286-grain Hornady Interlock Spire Point works great at 2400 too!

My go to 9.3 bullet is the 250 accubond at 2610 fps. Accurate to 600 yards in my FN Mauser over varget. Just started some test with the GS Custom HV 230, first loading is over 64 grains of RL 15 , Hornady brass , fed 210 @3.372 OAL for 2658 fps. 5 shot groups averaging .600.
Needed a monometal load for Ca. This might work, however these go for about $90.00 per 50. TSX's are almost as accurate.
Going back to the GS Custom, will try for more velocity as long as accuracy continues as is.

There's also the 210-grain Cutting Edge Raptor, which can be pushed to 2900 or so. I haven't shot anything except paper with it yet, but based on experience with a couple other Raptors it should work well, and is another "non-toxic" bullet without any lead.

And the fans of the traditional 286-grain weight (including me) have failed to mention the Norma Oryx, which like all the other 286's works very well.

I hope to give the 320gr Woodleigh a try in the near future. Several are getting 2400+ fps from RL-17. Should be great for moose and big bear.

So far, I've used the 286 Hornady and 286 Nos Partition on bear with good results. My go-to for the time being are those two 286s -- at 2400 for the Hornady from RL-15 and 2600+ from the Nosler from RL-17. QL says the Nosler load is 64,000 psi, same as a .338 Win Mag max load. No signs of over pressure.

No need for the 320gr, but just want to try it on something.

The link covers two test reports on various 9.3 bullets, including the 232 Oryx. One report is Australian, the other is Norwegian, but an English translation is included.

My CZ 9.3x62 likes JB's 250 NAB load. It will shoot that load sub MOA all day long. With a VX-6 1-6 #4 scope, at 300 yds, the reticle is a bit thick for precision shooting.

I mounted a 3-9x40 Conquest with elevation turret to see what it'll do on out to 400 yds. Not that the 9.3 is a LR rifle, but just to see what it will do. With tight 100 yd. groups, it should do pretty well at 400 yds.

You may be surprised Dirtfarmer. Please keep us tuned into your results. Your rifle is certainly capable of a 400 yard shot should you need to do so. It's not a range I usually would try but once in a while it's required.

I only know what my groups are at 100 yards with my CZ carbine and the FXII-3X has the thick German #1 reticle but then a moose is thick also.

I've posted before that my FN based 9.3x62 has been consistently accurate out to 600 yards. 250 Accubond @ 2611 fps, leupold VX3 3.5x10 CDS zeroed 200. Don't know that 600 yards is a shot that I'd take at a game animal but it can do it. My 12x12 steel plate never moves and usually gets set up in moderate terrain.

Now, you know good and well, you can't shoot 600 yds with just a hunting type scope with no more than 10X, top end... laugh

Least you could do was tell us you were really using a big, 2 pound Nightforce scope... cool

I have limited experience with them, but so far am impressed. The biggest animal taken was a cow nilgai, about the size of a cow elk, quartering strongly toward me at about 150-200 yards. I aimed just inside the near shoulder and that's where the bullet hit. It went on through the chest and exited around the last rib, and the nilgai crow-hopped sideways twice and fell over dead. Minimal meat damage but plenty big hole through the insides. Didn't hit any heavy bone but based on previous experience with heavier Hornady Interlocks I doubt there would have any problem. They're very accurate, too, but what 9.3 286 isn't?

Hornady also makes a 250-grain GMX, their monolithic plastic-tip, but only offers it in Europe. It works well too, but wish we could get it here.
