I was fortunate enough to get to help a family friend's newly 13 year old son (his birthday was the 19th) on his first elk hunt. We began hiking at 6:45 AM, slowly working our way up a timbered canyon with the wind in our faces, and by 7:05 I spotted a small bull and 2 cows, 300 yards up the canyon. I laid my Stone Glacier pack down in the canyon bottom, dialed my 7mm/08 up for the shot, and the youngster took it from there. Evidently he was a bit surprised by the light trigger, and coupled with shooting prone uphill, he was left with a nice little battle-wound. Despite getting scope bitten, he made an awesome shot, sticking the 150 NBT right behind the bull's shoulder. He wavered around for about 35 seconds behind an aspen, and dropped dead. I tried to get him to let me clean it up for pictures and bandage it, but he was laughing about it and said he wanted it in the photos. Great kid, and a great hunt. One rear and one front plus horns on the Stone Glacier...

35 seconds is a long time for a vital-shot bull to stay on its feet. Was that a typo?
In any case, great hunt! That kid will dream about that his whole life, but mostly in the next few off seasons.
I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.

In any case, great hunt! That kid will dream about that his whole life, but mostly in the next few off seasons. I wasn't checking my watch, so that's purely a guess. Could have been 20 seconds for all I know..? He didn't make it more than 10 yards, regardless. Tanner

Good on ya Tanner, looks like the kid hit the "X."!!
I love that photo, many years from now he will no doubt be glad he left the scope mark, it's a classic.

Tanner: Good for you on helping the young Hunter! The expression on his face (besides the scope bite!) insures that he will remember that Hunt and your efforts forever! Please extend my congratulaions to him. What a beautiful area for a Hunt! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

What!!! You can't shoot elk with a 7-08!!! This must be a Tanner trying to pull one on us! All kidding aside, I think seeing a kid get into hunting with great mentors is better than any trophy photo.
Congrats!

Pat, the bullet did not exit but I didn't find it either. I believe it stopped in the offside ribs/rear part of the shoulder? I didn't gut the elk so I didn't bother going in after the bullet. I was pretty impressed with it though.
