Where I grew up everybody had them in the pantry. I still eat them, though I'm the only one in the house that does. Back in the 60's my mother worked in the canneries when she was in high school. My family built a mustard mill to support the canneries in Eastport Maine in 1900. My uncle still operates it today. Last of the true cold grind mills left I believe. Still use grindstones they got from France when they opened. Sweet/Hot or Hot/Spicy? I like the sweet and spicy myself. The spring maple and the maple horseradish round out the regulars in my fridge. I'm biased though and like them all. I usually load up when I am back home visiting.

i keep forgetting about them. i need to hit the canned meat aisle at the IGA next time i go to camp. i used to eat them with my dad about 40+ years ago. trisket or ritz with some mustard or tomato sardines. never one for the oil packed ones.

I use to work with a guy that would have green chili sardines for lunch along with chocolate milk. It was a ghastly combination.  Good gawd! That is ghastly. No body should drink chocolate milk after second/third grade.

Anchovies rock as well!!!
I absolutely love anchovies. There is a pizza place here in Havre (of all places in the world, I know) that has the best fugging sausage and anchovies pizza on the planet. The Howard's pizza chain dishes up some amazing anchovies as well. Travis Nothing better than anchovie pizza. Pure heaven.

Travis! Had anchovies for lunch today!!! Thought about you!  I was thinking about me yesterday too! My wife ordered a peasant pizza the other night (Pizza Hut) and I got some anchovies on it. All anchovies are not created equal... Travis

When ever I get the idea that I need to lose a few pounds I'll be eating oil packed sardines a few Wasa crackers and salad.
The wife and I do enjoy anchovies with our pizza but we get them on the side. That way we get to control how many get put on and the kid's slices don't taste fishy.

Yeah the big bony ones I would use for crab bait, but I sure wouldn't eat them. The little ones, King Oscars, or whatever, are great. Canned smoked oysters- Yum, but again you have to be careful. The cheap ones are mushy and tasteless.

I know when I was a kid my grandfather and I ate sardines with the guts in them. I didnt eat any for years after he died and when i next tried them they were no longer little whole fish but are now either gutted and finned or just cross cut steaks.
Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!

I used to gag when I used 'em for coon bait. Can't stand to smell the things... What? You're not a connoisseur of sewer trout??  L.W. Oh hell no....my stomach churns just reading the various ways you guys eat them. Same here. Then again, I don't like tuna or salmon, either.

I'm not a fan of sardines, but I do like kippered herring and smoked oysters.

I had a can of "Icelandic Brook Trout" up in the hills with a buddy once. We were scouting for elk. Best damn canned fish I've ever had. And as the story goes I haven't found a can of it since. He (being an idiot) didn't know where he got it.

Hey 458 Lott, Costco has the Season brand on sale with $2.50 instant rebate for $6.09/5 pack. Ended up going a little overboard, spending $452. But, when I see the good stuff on sale, I buy it! They also had a new cheese they brought in a little while back. It's Kirkland brand and it's Asiago. It's called "Lake Country". I like it a lot. Got a nice flavor with plenty of bite. I bought it a couple weeks ago and have enjoyed it. Nice thing is, it's not expensive. Like $5-6/lb. Try a smidge of Asiago on one of these multigrain crackers (They're gluten free, BTW) with some sardines, a little hot sauce or pepper jelly, and throw back a few of these Kalamatas when your mouth starts to barely get less than full.
