I'm buying something w/o the J-lock. Do I need to buy the entire firing pin assembly or just a shroud/bolt plug?
What's the difference between the fluted firing pin assembly and non-fluted?
It's going on a LVSF 17 Remington.
Thanks

You will need the whole thing, not just a shroud. Fluted is just lighter, reducing lock time

agreed, change the assembly, not just the shroud. when you remove the j-lock assembly you will see why.

I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

My Callahan works as well as my GreTan and seems to produce slightly faster lock time.....

I have a few Callahan assemblys. the firing pin tip is slightly oversize making them a better fit in the bolt.

Change the whole thing and get rid of that anaconda wrapped around the firing pin and the "sproing" noise when you lift the bolt to cock it.

Buy the firing pin assembly from Pierce Engineering and never look back. http://www.pierceengineeringltd.com/category/accessories/product/pierceision-firing-pin-assemblyIt comes with the very handy tool. Just use the Remington bolt shroud. You pull out the Remington bolt and replace with the Pierce assembly and go shoot. I've shot over thousand rounds with my Pierce assembly without a hitch.

I have bought several factory replacements from Brownells and maybe Midway too. They match the Remington finish better which keeps the factory look.
Matters not as far as function is concerned.
