This PC is giving me the BSOD about 2-5X/day now. Did an internal check (F2 on reboot) and all passed. I still think the issue on this PC is the video card.. I get a buzz sound, the screen freezes, then it goes to the BSOD. Enough already..
My question is - since the hard drive on this PC was new about a year+ ago can it be used as a slave in the new PC I bought about 2 months ago? Both are HP units with W-7 OS installed. About the only difference between the two units is the old HP has an I3 chip while the new one is an I7..

based on my experiences - assuming their both Sata drives (they are) and have the same connectors, you should be able to swap them out - the motherboard will probably have a different chipset so during boot up you'll see a bunch of drivers load up - performance may not be quite the same but probably not noticeable.
If you make it too radical of a change, Microsoft just assumed you've copied your OS onto another computer and will make you register it again - its a possibility but I don't think it will happen in this case.
That said, a video card can be bought for as little as $35
have you paid your dues, can you moan the blues, can you bend them guitar strings

The buzz/freeze is normal when a BSOD happens.
If you zip all the files in C:\Windows\Minidump folder and send them to me, I can tell you more than likely the problem. PM me for email.

Matt I might do that.. But I just tried to find that folder and 'no matches' came up.. I'm probably doing it wrong (as usual) LOL based on my experiences - assuming their both Sata drives (they are) and have the same connectors, you should be able to swap them out - the motherboard will probably have a different chipset so during boot up you'll see a bunch of drivers load up - performance may not be quite the same but probably not noticeable.

IIRC, even another, older PC had a second connection on the ribbon to add another drive.. I'll have to find a bit of time to remove the cover on the new one and see..

I've had it with PCs. They don't seem to last more than four years before they start breaking down. Mine at home right now has been giving me fits for months, and has reached the point where it's almost unusable due to freezing up for fifteen or twenty seconds with each page turn or website change. I think I'm ready to finally try a Mac. With the new models coming out soon, the previous state-of-the-art Macs should be going for bargain prices.

Lee - even if the ribbon doesn't have the space, you can always go get a new one that does. Shouldn't have any issues (assuming there is space inside the box) to add a second / slave drive.

Spend the coin and go with a Mac.
America needs to understand that our troops are not 'disposable'. Each represents a family; Fathers, Mothers, Sons, Daughters, Cousins, Uncles, Aunts... Our Citizens are our most valuable treasure; we waste far too many.

[q Lee - even if the ribbon doesn't have the space, you can always go get a new one that does. Good point. Shouldn't have any issues (assuming there is space inside the box) to add a second / slave drive. I haven't dug into it yet, but I think there should be enough room.. Thanks all. On the advice of another poster I went to HP's site and downloaded all the updated drivers for this thing and so far (KNOCK ON WOOD HERE) it's not missed a beat since I started this thread.. Maybe I got lucky..
