I recently inherited and old Rem Model 700 in 7mm Mag that was owned by my late father. He bought it soon after the cartridge was released in the early 1960's and the barrel is pretty much shot out. I have a Rem Model 700 7mm Mag of my own that I have been carrying since I was 13 so I don't need another one but the rifle has a lot of sentimental value to me so I don't want to kust send it down the road.
I have a new unfired barrel for a Rem Model 700 in 30-06 that a friend gave me after he bought a rifle for the action to build a wildcat on. I'm thinking about removing the shot out 7mm barrel and replacing it with the 30-06 barrel since I don't have an 06 right now.
My question is two fold:
1) Do I also need to replace the bolt since the base dimensions for the 2 rounds are not the same. The 30-06 is slightly smaller in both base diameter and rim thickness but I don't know if it is enough to make a major difference.
2) Will I need to have any work done on the feed rails or will the 30-06 feed smoothly on the factory rails?
Any info that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Question 1. Yes Question 2. I'm not sure but it could be as simple as a mag box and follower change.
Option 1. Rebore to a 358 Norma or 358 STA Option 2. Have Redneck " smith on here" look at the barrel. The barrel might be good and the throat shot. Set the barrel back and use my reamer to rechamber to 7mm Mashburn Super. Option 3. Again check the throat and barrel. If the barrel is good. Set the barrel back and keep your dad's caliber. Nothing wrong with having 2 7 mags. This is probably the cheapest option. I'm not a smith but I like guns a lot. And I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Want To Buy; Form die for a 7mm Mashburn Super. .284 Hornady AMax 162gr. .224 Hornady AMax 75gr. 22-250 bushing die Bushing die that will work with the 7mm Mashburn Super A couple Glock 42 380ACP mags

load some rounds in the magazine and see if they will feed. If they don't feed now they won't feed later. probably the magazine is cut out too big.

It's not really practical to down size an action designed for a larger dia case and when the base case is changed feeding can be a sometimes affair and quite frustrating.
I'd stick with the 2.5" belted case and pick a cartridge that tickles your fancy:
257 Weatherby mag 264 Win mag 300 Win mag 338 Win mag

Are you REALLY sure the barrel is "shot out"? Unless the was an avid shooter, shooting lots of ammo through it, most guys aren't going to wear out a barrel, especially a magnum. I would try to clean it down to bare metal with "Shooter's Choice" or something like that and then try some different loads.

Like another said above, stick with the magnum bolt - for one.. Two, Rem barrel contours prevent much setback beyond one thread due to the nearly immediate taper (something I've always disliked). Three - DO a full and thorough cleaning of that bore before you do anything - then shoot about 20 rounds of factory ammo through it (no more than 3 at a time between cooling) before you try for accuracy.. If it's still crap, then go to #4: Four - The 'new' 30-06 barrel could be used, just rechamber it to .300 Win Mag. You'd be able to keep the bolt as-is, the magazine and follower as-is and you'd have a round that is very versatile on a barrel with new rifling.. Only thing left to do then is 'X' out the 30-06 stamping on the barrel and change to 300WM and you're good to go.. FWIW..

a quick chamber cast could tell you a lot about the throat situation. I have a foul out 3 that works magically on fouled barrels.....but it requires patience. you may also send a plea for a takeoff barrel, that may keep you in the game for cheap. you may also look for a bolt swap in the classifieds, which will save you a bit of coin on bolt work, but require fitting......tough one to win without opening the wallet, and once you do.....a new tube from a decent maker is only a bit more $$ and a truing job is only a bit more $$ and a stock is only a bit more $$ and a........
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

264WM is a perfect fit for the magazine and bolt.

I would chamber it to 300 Win Mag and load down to 30-06 ballistic if that is what you are looking for. You want lose as much vel going from 24 to the 22 inch barrel in 300 WM as most wouldn't think.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Exactly....which is why I suggested the .300WM above.. It would make perfect sense with that setup he has, along with that donor -06 barrel.

I was thinking a new barrel and save the 30-06 barrel for a replacement barrel.

New take off 700, 7MM Rem Mag barrels are really easy to find and don't cost much.

New take off 700, 7MM Rem Mag barrels are really easy to find and don't cost much. Or any of the others mentioned. Personally I'd go for a .338WM as the 7mm is so close in performance to the 30's on either side, tho they will load heavier bullets. The '06 to 300WM as Redneck says will be the most economical.
