Was going to use stainless classic in either 7 wsm or 338 wsm but Army has other plans going to ntc during 4th rifle season. So no elk hunting

IF I were hunting elk this season, instead of working in Japan, it would defintely be with one of my Model 70s. It is a hard choice between .300 WSM, .338 Win Mag (my only stainless) and .375 H&H -- all LH Classics.

The left handed stainless classics are something to be desired. Post some pics of them if you want. There are some left handed shooters in the Winchester forums. 79s and I both fit that bill... Probably the only thing him and I agree on

My late father in laws' sister was head of Wyoming fish and game in late 60's or 70's. He would go up from S FL and hunt a couple weeks every year, he was a surgeon, he told me the finest gun ever made was a late 50's mod 70 in 338 win mag. I know he had a lot of one shot bang flop on some big animals. His family got tired of eating elk! My wife told me that every time we had game for dinner. I wish I could justify one. SW GA whitetails dont require a 338 win mag. then again when does a pre 64 loon need an excuse... very best on a lot of nice guns. WinPoor

2 elk...not bad for a gimp! ( hows the leg BTW?) It has been almost 8 weeks. I have been able to stand now, for more than 2 minutes for about 10 days. Walking isn't bad at all. I did miss getting around during archery season, but the rest of the season is looking great. Most of that is due to the freezer fillers from yesterday...

Well, I thought I'd just pack my 338 Alaskan around this year. But what's the fun in that?? .. I ended up packing my sniper grey cerakoted classic sporter 30-06 for a couple days, and my FN 300 WSM with the EW barrel, topped with a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42, and Swirly stock I got from good ol Oregon45: Sniper grey cerakoted classic sporter (old reliable): And the old girl looking for some elk: Saw some of these today as it was snowing: I was hot on the trail yesterday. Ran into 10 elk in the thick stuff, but couldn't put antlers on any of them . I know there was a bull in the bunch though!!!!!

It was steaming!! And I didn't even have to pop it in my mouth to see how fresh it was . Thanks for the words of encouragement. I ran into a group of elk today (about 20 head). Well, not today as it is already Saturday. I snuck up to about 50 yards of some of the stragglers. The bigger critters were already in the thicker stuff, so I didn't know if there were any bulls in the bunch. We had about 11 inches of snow, so tracking was easy and quiet. The straggler cows and calves started to move into the thick stuff, so I checked them all out pretty good and no bulls. I circled out around them and caught sight of more cows and calves. I was on a bull track though and I wondered where the bastid was. I tracked slow and meticulously and ran into them again. This time they were in a place where I could see better. They started to move to the east and I watched one after the other until one small bull came out. He trotted behind the rest of the herd. I was using my 300 wsm today because I wanted to see if the MOA trigger was going to freeze up on the SOB . It was a balmy 10 degrees when I pulled the trigger on the blue WSM. It fired without a hitch and the "blemished" 180 gr. Nosler partition did it's job. The bull was quartering away when the bullet landed home. I didn't think there would be much heart left on this bull, and I was right: When we were done packing the little guy out, this is what the thermometer in my truck said: You guys be safe out there on your hunts and make sure you pack your Winchesters and post some pics... Outstanding! Great to see that blue stock on an Elk!

Thanks guys. I think the blue stock might be lucky for me. Oh by the way, JeffO is full of chit. Blue didn't scare those elk . At least, not until I fired the shot.

85 yards and in the offhand position. I think 99% of my shooting consists of this shot. Too many years chasing jacks in the Nevada sage I guess

Way to go BSA! It's been a long time since my feet have touched snow, I'm glad you tagged a bull. Freezer full of meat too.
JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Sounds like a fun hunt. Thanks buddy. It was fun and rewarding. The 1 1/2 mile packout was a pain. 7 days into the hunt in a 3% hunters success rate unit makes the meat taste better

Good work on the bull, it was a cold season!! First is my NH Super grade in 300 RUM. Deer was taken with my push feed M70, plastic stock 300 Win. Mag (Sold from Walmart in 1997), both are excellent shooters! [img:left] [/img] [img:left] [/img] [img:left] [/img] [img:left] [/img]
