Nope, but if you go make sure you visit the Adak National Forest.

Jim Shockey has run hunts out there. Don't know if he still does.

Scott Haugen is out there right now filming a caribou hunt for a TV show. I will be meeting up with him on his way through town. I am curious how he is doing out there.

When I asked the game department if there is a place to hunt caribou without walking on muskeg he told me Adak Island is rolling hills and grassland. Do you have such a place in mind?

Never been to Adak. I think it would be a really cool trip/huge PITA. I'd probably consider hunting a secondary goal to the walk through history.

Fly out there on Alaska Airlines miles if possible. Its an expensive flight otherwise. Flights are on THursdays and Sundays I believe. You can rent half of a duplex from the Aleut Enterprise native corp for pretty cheap. Bring coolers or action packers with grocery store food to eat while there as it is ridiculous expensive for food and gear there. Use the action packers/coolers to bring meat home in. The duplexes have garages with freezers in them so you have a place to cut and package meat. There is a rough road network there and you can rent a pickup or atv there, contact Jack Stewart or Joe Galaktionoff. The south end of the island is non motorized federal preserve or something.

THe caribou can be found near town in the winter months, but move more to the more remote south end of the island the rest of the year. I am told the hunting has taken a nose dive since a certain outfitter started guiding out there. He takes a boat to the south end and has really knocked the population down supposedly.

I have been out there a few times for work and haven't been able to get far enough from town to get on any caribou yet. I came close in March one year when they were close to town. I'm not a huge fan of bou meat so it didnt hurt my feelers too much.

It has probably changed since I was there, but if you are looking for grassland and no muskeg..... That isn't the place. No mosquitoes though. The Caribou can be anywhere on the island depends.. Big bou are about or at least where. Tundra, tundra, and wet. The boat trip around to the other side was the best bet. No idea if the cabins or SAR barrels are still maintained.

I checked and Joe and possibly Jack are not on Adak anymore. I believe Jacks son Jay is still there and could probably set you up with a rig or direct you to who might have one.

No idea how the herd is right now, but I found it to be not too swampy or wet, at least where i was at. Sure lots of low spots but lots of rock and dry ground too. Look out for Rommel stakes and bring serious wind gear.
