While we were hunting area 380 in Montana, we saw a monster bull elk, but you can't shoot them without a special permit, so we decided to do the next best thing and shoot the legal elk. I shot a spike and a cow, my son shot a cow and we headed home with a trailer load of elk. I always keep a set of horns in the back of the truck to make the elk look bigger than a cow or spike. What a great way to start the season in Montana...

That'll be good eats! I really am not living right as I've never been able to hunt elk on terrain that gentle. Well done.

Sako deluxe 300 Weatherby with 26 inch barrel and a Vais style brake made and installed by Peter Noreen. The rifle has been bedded and a Decelerator pad installed by Mark Gustafson, a very capable and relatively unknown gunsmith.

The trigger is set at 3 pounds. The scope is a Swarovski Z-6 3-18 with BR-H reticle. Ammunition is handloaded with Weatherby brass, Nosler 180 grain ballistic tip bullets and IMR 7828 SC powder, with a velocity of about 3200 FPS.

The cow was at 350 yards the spike was shot later at almost the same distance.

This rifle with this load is easily lethal to 700 yards. Of course you would never take a shot that far as that would be unethical...

Of course not, someone may not like you for doing that. Bring your junk up to Montana and maybe we could try some long range shots...

I'd love to get up again. With a very sick wife on dialysis, it's not happening for awhile. Was up West of Clark Canyon Resv, 2 years back for elk and deer. Friend took a bull, I shot a 3x4 mulie @ 500 with my dinky 6.5x47 and the 127 LRX.

I hope to someday meet you, Pat, Montana Marine and John B.

Congrats - nice way to open the season, filling tags with your son.

Nice shooting Shrapnel and son!

What are the details of your sons' rifle and are you using the new thicker jacket BTs?
