I can get a Pre64 Model 70 30/06 Featherweight for 800.00 but the stock has been cut and recoil pad added to it. If this was a 270 I would buy it in a minute. Do you guys think this is a good buy? I already have a classic 1953 30/06 so I really don't need two. How hard do you guys think it would be to find a featherweight stock that hasn't been messed with and what kind of price will I have to pay for it. Thanks Rick

You'd be paying about $400.00 for an all original fwt stock. $800.00 is not an exceptional deal unless the rest of the rifle is in primo condition. Also, your 1953 isn't considered a "classic", as those came out in '92 wink.. It also sounds like you don't want it since it's not a 270. Your own subconscious is telling you not to buy it. You may want to listen wink . Save it for someone who likes the 30-06 and appreciates it for what it is. That guy may opt to throw the barreled action into a Mcmillan like I've done with my fwt 06..

You'll probably be glad you did as it seems you like the 270 better. I don't blame you as my 270 outshoots my 30-06 on a regular basis. They are truly sweethearts to shoot. However, I had to put mine in micky stocks and take advantage of the 1" pachmayr decelerator. The aluminum butt plate rifles start to hammer you after a while. If you find one in this vintage with the aluminum butt plate, hang on to the stock because they are very desirable and then stock the rifle accordingly. I hunt and do a lot of shooting at the range so I appreciate the comfort of the rubber recoil pad vs. the hard butt plates. Pal here has a sweet pre 64 fwt with a recoil pad installed that he paid $700.00 for. If he sees this thread, maybe he can post a pic of it. Those are the kinds of deals I look for (sub $700.00 shooters)....

Never buy a rifle that you don't consider what it will take to sell it to someone else. If you never trade or sell one of your guns, you can always buy what you want. If you do sell and trade, you have to consider the excuse for why a gun has been modified.

A cut pre-64 is still a very serviceable rifle, but I would never buy one...

And I thank guys like you, because some of us like hunters/shooters. My motto is buy low sell high. Unless selling to friends.... wink I also agree with Winchesterpoor about a good rifle selling itself. Most "good" pre 64's sell almost effortlessly with little to no leg work...
