Or to be more accurate, mixed greens will be on the menu today along with turnips, cornbread and pepper sauce. I am cutting up my MZ doe deer and got to thinking on how this seems to happen year after year. I will eat my first greens of the season about the time I am cutting up a deer. Life could be worse. miles

I love fresh greens, but the only place to find them is in a bag at Walmart.

I was referring to my situation Miles. I tried growing some collards but I had some type of insect I could not eradicate and they were literally eaten up.

Last time I was at LT Powell's camp we had some mustard greens I believe. They were good.

Same here but I do like mashed turnips.

The best greens are those, which have been touched by their first frost. Eliminates the bitterness.

Just made a bunch of collards this past week. Finished the leftovers yesterday. Mustard greens are good too, specially mixed with turnip greens and served with pork.

Good for you Miles!

I love greens! Collard, turnip, mustard, kale..... Love them all! Black kale is a new favorite though.

Planted a couple black kale a few weeks ago and sumptins chewing on them already, and it ain't me.

Sounds like some garden dust is in order. If you don't like that idea try some Listerine watered down some, and spray it on. miles

I get a garden dust that kills things that Sevin won't . On the other hand, Sevin kills some bugs that the garden dust won't. miles

Listerine eh?

1 : 1 with water?

I'll definitely give it a run.

Well, I don't measure it, just pour some of each. Talk around here this summer is that this works to keep mosquitoes away from the door, but I have never used it for this. I started using this for aphids in the garden. miles

My cabbage and Brussels sprouts got decimated by cabbage aphids last year. I tried soapy water.......the bugs were just less thirsty.

I'll try the listerine solution!

Hey mannlicher, can you grow your own? I am south of you and I can grow them easily here. I had my best plants last up to 3-4 yrs, producing year after year. They are an awesome food source.

I used to make a big stock pot of them with smoked ham hocks (Cook down, cut down, separate bone and marrow), onions, cayenne, garlic, organic chicken stock, salt $ pepper, chili powder, small can of tomatoe sauce, with a big pot of Hop n John next to it, with cornbread for New Year and take to my part-time job I work for healthcare benefits. Not done that in the last couple years. Would do so again, though.
