Got a big old bag of once fired 30,06 Super-X brass nice and neat in the cardboard boxes. Processed as usual and set them aside. Got two youngsters interested in shooting so I loaded up the good 'ol 30 Gr. 4198 and some blem 168 match bullets. Mild recoil bug hole groups yada yada yada.

Processed the empties and noticed a faint scratch all the way around the cases on the body, below the shoulder. I have seen this before! Bet'ch all that brass came out of a Garand or BAR or maybe even a bolt gun with reamer mark in the chamber.

Then I did a little batch of match Federal .308s...and saw the same mark!

What is going on here? Review...Anybody have a LEE chamfer gizzey? Mine is 30 years old, been using it so much the inside part is dull, but the outside cutter is still good to go.

If you are not paying attention, the rim of the gizzey will rub a faint ring around the cartridge case while you are deburring the outside of the case mouth! On 308 and 30'06. A dozen other calibers that live at my house do not have the gizzey mark, just the SX '06s and Fed 308s.

You have some crap in your die.

Hose it out with some brake cleaner.

I may be the only one who actually looks at my brass from time to time.
The Lee gizzey will rub a scratch around the case body if the operator is sloppy. No ammo effect, just made me stop and ponder.

My DAD taught me the importance of inspecting brass at a very early stage. Don't know how many tiny, minute cracks I found on the necks of Ackley cases. powdr

One of my rifles does this -- it's a burr of some sort on the chamber which marks the cases as you extract fired cases. Find a way to gently grind it down/have a 'smith investigate and fix.

Believe the burr in mine is located near where the lugs interface with the chamber at the cartridge head.

Yep. I noticed the ring around the case after about the first three .30-06 cases I chamfered about 30 years ago.

So, I put a ring of plastic electricians tape on the inside of the tool. That solved the problem, and was easier than trying to be a non-sloppy operator.

If the tape picks up some tiny metal particles, the tool can return to marking cases. The tape may need replacing when that happens.

Been loading for 20 years and never heard of a dizzy. Enlighten me,

I'm not sure whether your post was directed at me in particular, but my post didn't include the term "dizzy", and I don't think it's been used in the other posts in this thread. In two posts Uncas mentioned a Lee "gizzey", which term I suspect is derived from "gizmo" (alternate spelling is "gismo"), a word at least partially synonymous with dingus, whatchamacallit, gadget, widget, thingy, thigamabob, etc.

In this instance, the gizmo is a Lee Chamfer Tool, Lee SKU #90901. It's useful for removing the burrs that occur commonly on case mouths after trimming with a rotary cutter. If you've reloaded for 20 years without the need for a case mouth chamfering gizmo, then an offering of heartiest congratulations is in order.
