I have two option for field carry (field carry is that back-up sidearm when hunting with a ML or bow - yes, that's legal here - and the one that goes along while fishing, camping, etc.).
.357 Magnum or .44 Special. The .357 is a GP100, 4". The .44 is a 5-shot Charter Arms Bulldog.
The .357 is heavy, but built like a tank. The Charter is small, light, and strong enough for .44 Special loads. I'm thinking that there isn't much that a .429" 225 to 245 grain LSWC couldn't handle that a 180-200 grain .358" could.

My choice would of course be the forty-four.........I like big holes. It's a shame Ruger doesn't make the GP100 as a five shot 44 Special; now that would be a special Special.
If we live long enough, we all have regrets. But the ones that nag at us the most are the ones in which we know we had a choice.

For back up I'd take the Bulldog simply because it is lighter.

Yes it would be. But I can still picture in my mind.....a four inch half lugged barrel wouldn't be too bad. Ah, there I go dreaming again.

I remember brian pearce talking about a .44special round that went clear through an elk, which should be sufficient for most anything other than the great bears.

I can't figure if this is a "pick one" or "name your own" thread. Of those 2, I would take the Charter Arms if it was reliable and shot well enough. If I were to name my own in the same weight range, it would be the Springfield XDS in .45 with a couple of spare magazines. I carry that as a backup when carrying a rifle. As an "only firearm" I would need to experiment with some specialty Buffalo Bore loads.

Of the two I'd pick the Charter. I've got both but the Charter goes with. Keep on in my truck.

I would go with the .44 Special. It will handle anything you will need it for, much less obtrusive to carry, and probably more accurate to boot.

Nope...but you can find me working in sporting goods at the local Walmart in Cottonwood until a real job shows up.

If the Charter shoots to the sights with something akin to the Skeeter Load, I'd give it consideration. But if you want some thump I'd load the GP with hot 180-200 grain hardcast loads, adopt a comfortable carry system and call it good.
