Sad state of affairs we have with a majority of 17 cal bullet manufacturers all but abandoning production of the 17 cal bullets. Hornady seems to have this market cornered near as I can see.

My hat is off to Hornady for a job well done! if my information is correct all 3 of there premium17 cal offerings will be available soon.

Compare this to Nossler or Berger and it simply seems these firms have handed the 17 cal market to Hornady. A few years back Berger opted to get away from there target tip due to lack of market demand. whistle Now they have abandoned the 17 cal product line all together. The Nebraska firm beats all others in terms of price, avalibility and with no compitition there quality may be second to ..............NONE

A great big THANK YOU to the Hornady team. You have been there supporting and promoting the 17 cal world for many years! Here is looking forward to a good many more. smile

Hope the New 17 HH centerfire offering realizes the longevity this firm seems to stand for.
If it is not to much to ask It sure would be nice if we could breathe life back into the 17 Mach II. This is a caliber which deserves more recognition that has been awarded. This is and has been an outstanding round in bolt action firearms.

Thanks again to Hornady for promoting and supporting this small caliber world. Hornady had not been the only face promoting this caliber though they do stand out like no other!

When I had my first 17, Remington and Hornady were the only kids on the block. Berger was just starting to turn out a few bullets. I found the Remingtons to be sporadic in their performance from lot to lot. The Hornady 25 grain HP seemed to be extremely reliable and never failed me and I used them exclusively for years. I've managed to accumulate about 800 of them for my new 17. I'll keep buying them every time I see them, which is seldom right now. I seem to see their VMax 20 and 25 grain pretty often but few of the HP's.

I can't say that I've ever seen Berger or Nosler 17 caliber bullets available locally. Honestly, as well as the Hornady 25 grain HP performs in a 17 Remington, I don't know that I will even bother with any others in the new rifle.

I haven't been able to find anything but the 20 vmax locally as of late. I have some 25 HPs squirreled away but only about 100. Sad deal is that about 2 weeks before I bought my 17 I could have bought a pile of the bergers for $10 a box and passed because I had no need of them. I honestly never thought I would get a 17 and stumbled into mine for $200, don't think I'll ever be without one now! Just need to find a big box of 25 grainers.

Woodchuck Den, for Kindlers, if he still makes them. Pricey but work extremely well in everything I have put them in. Chan Nagle is apparently back up and running. Someone on Saubier will have his contact. No website. I have not bought bullets for a while. I thought Berger was going to keep the 25. Heard somewhere that 17 jackets moved to a price point little guys had to stop.

Hornady's Zmaxes in 20gr. seem to shoot well in my .17Hornet (as do Hornady 25HPs), but Midsouth is still advertising their Varmint Nightmare Extreme 20gr.HP (made by Nosler), if you're in dire need. Midway sells the same bullet as Dogtown bullets.

Midsouth beats Midway all to pieces on prices, though, and sell the 500 ct. boxes for less than $40.

What I have really been looking for recently would be a 25 grain HP well suited for Coyote, at 17 hornet to 17 rem velocities. At one time Berger had a 25 gr target tip option that was viewed by many to be better than the Hornady #1710. I have worked with the 20 gr Varmint nightmare and have been reasonably satisfied with accuracy.

Would have a little more confidence in a 25 grain Hornady, Berger or even would be hopeful that a 25 grain Varmint Nightmare may be a offering in the not to distant future.

As things stand my best hope looks to be Hornady 1710s that Hopefully will be available some time this month. Suppose better late rather than never.

Huntsman, I do value your experience and opinion.

While I agree that the 20-gr v-max can be devastating with proper bullet placement. Wouldnt a 25 grain bullet with a slightly tougher jacket design offer a little more flexibility / forgiveness in shot placement?

Personally I would only feel comfortable taking a broadside shot or quartering away on a coyote with the 20-gr v-max. On the other hand with 25% more weight in a 25-grain hollow point and a somewhat tougher jacket construction I might consider a frontal shot as well with a Hornady 1710 for instance. JMHO

I'm just saying that you could use the 20 grainers until you find what you want. It's not like they don't work....

My BAD Ill be patient till the correct bullet for my application becomes available again. And then we may be forced to join the Hoarders when the prefered bullet for the job at hand becomes available.

Never checked on woodchuck den. As I remember they were only 30 grain offerings that work well in the 17 Rem possibly the 17 fireball. Not so much the 17 hornet capacity case for the Thirties. Price point of the woodchuck den turned out to shy me away as well. Hard to stock up at the prices I recall.

BTW the 25 Hornady HP #1710 are in stock now at Midway and Powder Valley at prices that I may stand to stock up with.

Wow what a difference a few weeks and or months can make in the availability of 17 cal bullets. Feels like some of the availability momentum has swung with the election. About time

Listed below are a few of the offerings to be found.

I doubt it had anything to do with the election. Instead it probably had to do with bullet companies switching from making big game bullets for fall to making varmint bullets for winter and spring.

Appears I am in the minority wanting the heavier hollow point bullets. Majority of the on line vendors have the 1710s in stock now. Surprisingly they are generally able to maintain this product in stock for the last couple of weeks. Even a few 25 grain Bergers to be found, just wished they still offered the target tip on those Bergers.

How are those Nosler's working out for you? Accuracy and penetration are the measures I am interested in. did you get both the hollow points ant the polymer tipped offerings?
