I keep thinking about the Savage because of the barrel swapping.
What barrels?

I am looking at a nicely priced non catalog Ruger Hawkeye SS, 20, synthetic. I just need to know the twist. 8,9 great,10 ok. I just don't want 12. I have an e-mail in to them to see if they will check it. Their material doesn't say. I suspect it is 9, if it was built in the last five or so years. Their 16" and 22" are 9. I just don't want a pig in a poke.

If it's the 20" Ultra light .223 and it says Hawkeye on the receiver, it'll have 9" twist. They switched from 12 to 9 when they switched from 77Mkll to Hawkeye.

The more pertinent question might be, will I have a rifle that I can be proud of, and pass down to my kids and grandkids? You get what you pay for. I think at least get a Hawkeye with the 1:9 twist. No plastic please.......

If I had a 57 Chevy in my garage, I'd be pretty excited to pass it down to my kids. Doesn't mean its going to be my daily driver...
Theres a time and place for the economy rifles, IMO. Especially in 223, because they can use them while they are kids and you dont have to worry about all those dings they'll put in them.

Already have a Hawkeye.
Went with Mr. Potato head. I can pick up a RAR later on after I fondle a few. The trigger is very nice on Mr. Potato head and the bolt opens smoothly, not hard like others complain about.
Probably going to hang a 6.8 SPCII on it for next year. Need to get on a list because the lead time is rather long.
If this shoots like my other salvage 223 I will have no complaints what so ever. I am going to check the twist today and see what it really is. My other salvage is almost an 8.5" twist. Maybe I will get lucky again and this will also be that.

exactly! as much as I would like a Kimber in 223, the utility of the gun for me is no more than a fixed 4X with a 62TSX or 75 Swift S2 in the compact ruger model for looks like close to 7 bills. I cannot see the utility of a slower twist for a general purpose 223 nor spending $1500 + bucks to get a bolt action 223 set up at this stage of my life.
