I was directed here from another board where they suggested that you folks were the experts on identifying models, age and value of Savage Firearms. I have inherited a Savage 99 in 30-30.

The serial number is 315209. Any help identifying the model and a value would be helpful. For more picture here is the slide show. http://s1273.photobucket.com/user/fawkesman/slideshow/Savage

Post 1926/27 when they went to that style front sight. Model 99E I'm thinking. Should be 22" barrel IIRC.

Delicious.

Yep, that looks like a very fine 99E from 1928. You're going to get a lot of "discussion" in regards to value, but it's definitely a collectible gun by the looks of it.

The 99E was introduced in 1920/1921 and was the new name for the solid frame 1899H, which was introduced in 1905. The 99E was made up until the late 30's or 40.

When did the integrated sight become replaced with the raised dovetailed sight as what this fine rifle has? Thanks John

Bet it has a painted front sight too. grin

Probably made about 5 months after the sight I posted. Would look VERY sharp next to each other.

By god that does appear to be a pre war E.

Not a common gun in good original condition which this one appears to be in.

In fact I think that is problably the best one I have ever seen.

Value: Whatever somebody is willing to pay for it. E's were kind of the poor mans 99 during the depression, making one in good original condition all the harder to find. I've seen so few of them, can't even say what it might be worth. 600- 700 in todays market would be my best guesss. There are so few of them only a few have seen and know what they actually are. Kind of a diamond in the ruff...

I would make a spot next to the dog and I in bed for that sweet little honey. blush

*If it was a 250-3000, I'd have to limit my exposure to it for my hearts sake.

The early E was not a poor mans gun it cost in Jan 1928 E solid Frame 41.00 A Solid Frame 41.00 H Carbine-Solid Frame 37.50
The E is a rare gun and will go for more than 700.00 it's time you guys stop trying to steal all the Savage guns you all want more than your guns should bring but do not want to pay a dollar
for a good one and it has held the Savage prices very low!!

On the contrary, I could argue that their are guys quoting ridiculous numbers in an effort to inflate their collections value.

A gun is worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it regardless of what I or anybody else here thinks it's worth.

To suggest that my opinion of what a gun's value is has any bearing on Savage market prices is amusing to me.

I have a pre war E in 300 that I would gladly sell for $700. Anybody interested can drop me a PM.

And the pre war E was a plain Jane in the 99 line. It was not a poor mans gun. That was not the best choice of words on my behalf as you could have bought a Winchester or many other guns for cheaper.

A good pre war E is not a common gun. It would bring whatever the market bears.

C Broad Arrow, you might find that your rifle has a barrel with take-down information stamped on the bottom. It was common practice at the time to use take-down barrels on both take-down and fixed rifle models. It is a fixed barrel so don't try to remove it.

Take care of it. It's a good one.
