If Remington (or any other corporate group) has a bullet you really like, get it now, in bulk, whenever and wherever you can. They used to make a great 17 caliber bullet, and it was oh so economical, and then the supply dried up. I even called them and begged, all to no avail.

Trying to find a supplier with a bit of inventory may take a little time, but do it anyway. Remington basically told me to my telephone face that they had to jetison the losers in the bullet world, and their 17s were all gone. The same thing happened with the 250 gr bullet for the 350 Rem Mag, if memory serves me correctly. We are the last to know.

Get 'em while you can, especially with the global metal markets doing dirty deeds to our bullet costs and supply lines.

I checked, and MidwayUSA is now stocking the Remington 200 grain PSPCL again. I finally couldn't stand the wait and ordered some round-nosed Remmies a couple of weeks ago.

Oh well. I guess the shortage was a seasonal thing.

The 200 grain round-nosers should be just fine . . . right? I mean if they work on deer in 35 Rem and 358 Winnie, they should open up okay with less-than max loadings in 35 Whelen.

. . .Right?

The more I think of Ol' Hubert, just staring me down while I'm pumping one round after another into him. . . that's got me dreaming.

shaman,I would like to get a few boxes of 30 cal 180gr SPCL bullets. The last time I looked at their website they were listed as a component. After trying several times to buy from the distributors that they recommended I gave up.They would send me bags of bullets with the correct part # but inside the bags were filled with bullets measuring .311 dia.I believe MULE DEER said to shoot them anyway but I'm chicken. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Shaman

From what i understand Remington never loaded a factory round for the .358 win so i would say the PSP-CL was designed for the 350 Rem mag and the 35 Whelen, just a guess.

I thought it was also being used in their 35 Remington. Oh well.

So what IS the best inexpensive .358 bullet for a slightly down-loaded 35 Whelen on deer in the woods?

The 180 gr Speer. We have used this bullet on scores of whitetails for two decades now. It's superb and proven out to at least 240 yds.

This is out of .358 Winchesters at 2700 + fps mv.

I prefer the lighter bullets for deer as long as the bore is large. With the smaller bores it gets more difficult to make a deep/large wound and then fancy bullets are better but in .35 that 180 is a hammer.

If they sold the 200 gr Silvertip for handloading I would use that again for sentimental reasons. Thats another very good deer bullet.

shaman,264bore is correct about PSP-CL but the 35 Reminton uses the SPCL it's a round nose.

Try Hornadys 200gr. RN #3515 Great bullet.
I have several hundred of the Remmy 200gr. SPCL around here somewhere if you would like to try some.

Big gripe of mine.... why has Remington never released the .338 bullets to the reloaders?

They even have a .338 cartridge of their own now .....

If I missed a source, someone kindly point it out.

EXCELLENT! Now there are two of us who are upset about this. I call Remington every six months and politely pester them. If enough of us did that, maybe we could get some cheap .338 boolits. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but somethings up. When Rem sells 8mm and .304 bullets, but not .338, they can't very well claim that the "demand" just isn't there. In the meantime I practice with Hornady and hunt with Partitions.

Okay. Earlier I posted that I'd gotten tired of waiting for PSPCL (pointy) ones and ordered the SPCL (round) ones. It sounds like the consensus is the round nose Remmies are the better ticket anywhay. We'll see. If they group like the PSPCL's I'll pull all the pointies and replace them with rounds and just not worry about it any more. It's not like I'm regularly going to be taking 300 yard shots with the rifle. In the past five years of hunting our farm, my longest shot was Ol' Hubert; I stepped that off at a whopping 80 yards.

Remington only does seasonal runs of ammo for the .35 Whelen as well as the .35 REM. They make all of the bullets in .358 for the year at the same time. This is why many times they are not available. Once they are sold for the year, they are done until the next years run.

I hope with the reintro of the .35 Whelen in several models of Remington rifles, they change this "seasonal" approach.

I used to shoot alot of the corelokts in my .35 Whelens years ago, but when availability became an issue, I switched to Hornadys.
