Our waterfowl hunting is not the greatest, but the dogs and I are having a great time.. Kate made a great retrieve on a crippled duck the other morning.. For a 2 year old she made her father very proud.. How are you guys doing???

She looks like my late Golden. I sure miss her, she was an outstanding retriever. Amazing how these dogs LOVE to go swim in ice-cold water to get a bird. It's almost like they were born to do it. smile

I had a female named pepper who was a cross golden/ black lab. She looked like a golden but she was black. Sweetest dog ever but she was scared of the water. weird! go figure?

As for my success,, our season isn't opened yet. Our september season for woodies and teal slipped by. I was sick and its only 5 days long. 1st wood duck season I had missed in 19 years. : (

Kate was at it again.. Very cold here, and the lake will probably freeze tonight. We got three, and she did not hesitate to dive into the freezing water to make the retrieves.. This will probably be our last hunt of the season due to cold frozen water.. Maybe in another area, but it is pretty much done here..

Wyo:

Try floating rivers as things freeze up. I've been at it there for > 20 yrs and never ran into another hunter - just greenheads and canadas!

Good luck!

I hardly venture out these days but on Friday I visited one of my favorite old ponds. A few early birds are around.

Got a nice sized one that we will cook on Christmas.

I had hoped to see if the heeler pup would swim the cold water but the goose plopped nearby on dirt.

We froze up hard at the peak of the migration during rifle deer season so now we've lost probably 75 percent of our ducks. Canada geese are still arriving but spotty at best. Probably hit it a few more times and then I'm done for this year..

We have a ice eater in the pond that keeps it opens, so that helps extend the season

I'm hunting in the swamps and sloughs near the Tar River in inland eastern NC; get about 20 minutes of off the roost flying early in the morning. Shooting Wood Ducks and got a Gadwall this past Saturday morning. Hunting is only 18 miles from home and is in waders, so it's worth it for the short shooting time - don't have to deal with a boat or decoy spreads (one Mojo works nicely).

We have a wody hole like that here. Thousand birds at first light. Then dead
