ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) � Independent candidate Bill Walker has won the Alaska governor's race after an aggressive challenge to Republican Gov. Sean Parnell.

Walker grabbed a slim lead on election night, but the race was too close to call until thousands of absentee and questioned ballots were counted this week.

Walker is the first candidate unaffiliated with a party since statehood to win the office. Walker, who finished behind Parnell in the 2010 GOP gubernatorial primary, bypassed this year's primary by gathering signatures to support an outside run. But he didn't change his party affiliation from Republican to undeclared until deciding to run with Democrat Byron Mallott.

Mallott won his party's nomination for governor, but a Walker-Mallott ticket was seen as more competitive. Walker and Mallott joined forces in early September.

So is this just the AP calling it or is this an announcement by the DoE as a result of the recount?

am hopin he's a good one, and doesn't have a heart attack!

I'm also hoping he's a good one but being the darling of the News Minus and endorsed Alaska Democrats does not bode well.

We sure have a history of "special" governors!

Well, I did say that I could live with Walker if we flushed Bagitch and it appears Bagitch is democrap flambe.

So I s'pose I should get used to the idea of him being around for the next four years or so. Also a lot of people I respect and consider to be intelligent supported Walker. I do hope they were right.

I'm not a huge fan of the way he got in, but he doesn't have real large shoes to fill if you ask me. Who was the last GOOD governor Alaska had in office??

Walker is not really the problem... Mallott is a total dirtbag with way too many people with a hand on his puppet strings.

Don't be surprised if we call him "senator" one day. (And yes, my tweaking of the re: title was not an accident.)

I don't have a lot of faith in Walker, for someone that's been trying to win the governership for 5 years now you'd think he'd have some sort of budget at the ready. He said in a debate right before the elections that if elected, he'd probably use Parnells budget proposal.

Oh yeah, then there's his running mate and choice of cabinet members......
