Hey guys. How many of you like the 7mm rem mag? BobinNH kinda got me interested in the big 7's. I know, the pre 64's were never chambered in this great round but other than that what can we not accomplish in NA with the big 7? I recently had mine cut down to 24" and it handles so much better now. I'm thinking the 7mm with a good bullet like the 150, 160 or 175 Nosler partition will get the job done on any critter walking the lower 48. What say you Winchester lovers. Is the Remington round worthy enough to work in our Winchester rifles? Sorry for bringing up my 7mm again, but I had it in the shop today putting a different scope on it. I also put the talley lightweights back on it. I really enjoy shooting this rifle. I like the Nikon 2.5-10x42 much better than the Zeiss 4-12x42 I had on it before. The Nikon is easier to get behind and the glass is better for my crappy eyes.

What can't you do with it? You can't shoot a 300 mag out of it LOL! The 7Mag is one round that I've never had the least bit of interest in, not that it's not a good round but I've always preffered a 30 caliber. Either one will do whatever it is you ask it to do.

Good choice on the scope! I recently switched to Nikon Monarch 3 and 7's on all my guns.

Thanks reelman. I got lucky and found this one 2 years ago for $125.00 at a gunshow. That guy didn't know what he had. I almost felt guilty until he said it's not a leupold. Then it was game on buddy!! I bought it without hesitation because I've had great luck with Nikon products. Especially the monarchs... I had this scope on my blue 300 WSM a few days ago when I shot my bull:

I used my 9.3x62mm before I was taking head shots and there was minimal meat damage

I have to agree, I always figured the 300 was the "do all" cartridge. I've owned several 7 mags over the years, and always used them for trading stock. I must confess, however, I recently acquired a pre 64 that was rebarreled to a 7 mag. I have not shot it yet, but I will, and this one I intend on keeping. It probably won't get hunted much, but at least I can say I have one, lol.

What's the stock on that top stainless one?

I like my customized 700 lefty in 7mm. I think you're right...the 7mm will handle anything in N America with Partitions. I like the 160s. Sometimes we over-think this killing stuff...there's so many calibers that will work equally well. I'd be happy with a pair of .30-06s. But then it wouldn't be as fun arguing, comparing or thinking about another rifle or caliber. Options keep the shooting game interesting.

Roger that, and thanks! I made a conscious decision years ago to transition almost completely to lefties...exception was pre-64 M70s. If I got rid of most everything, the right-handed M70s would be the last to leave.

There's a really nice right-handed post-64 Classic 70 in 7mm Mag on GunBroker...I'm tempted. If I got it, I'd do the same thing you did: cut the barrel to 24", with a nice crown. Think I'm going to look at it again.

When one looks at classic sporting rifles not much is finer than early production
M700 7mm RM with blued stainless barrel. Remington was first mass producer to offer rifle with blued stainless barrels (I understand Winchester made few shotguns like M12 like that). I walked away from such rifle that was in excellent condition. That was another foolish decision. The 7mmRM is suitable for ALL large NA game.
