I would clean up the existing floorplate and use a Bansner stock, my preference of all and I enjoy the "work" of fitting and painting. I would add one of Kebco's lightweight recoil pads. rebarrel to 35 Whelen with a PacNor #1 at 22" and a 12 twist. Wrap-up with S&K mounts and the latest 2-7X Leupold. Then chase elk.

I think Ed has nailed it pretty well!
I have had a few McMillan stocks for model 70s and was not too fond of the supergrade or the compact. If I was going to run another McMillan I'd look hard at the hunter for a rifle with a decent sized barrel. (not sure I'd do that with a fwt profile)
I've had a few Bansners and like them a lot. I had one on a Fn actioned whelen and it handled recoil very well.

The only other cartridge I'd consider for it would be 25-06. But I already have a pre-64 257 Rbts.

I thought about Pacnor. A #1 would leave about .12" wall thickness. Is that enough? Would probably be thicker at 22", though.

I'd rebore and chamber to 35 Whelen Ackley Improved and just change the 2 to 3! Haha. That would be cool.

Oh, and Robert Levine was an idiot and had zero taste.

Screw you! I'm voting for Trump again!

Ha. Good plan.

Here's the plan as it stands now. I added a little class.

Shilen #3 CM Blank - ordered from Midway.
Will have it installed and chambered in 35 Whelen. Cut to 22".
Will try to remove engraving and use factory floorplate.
All metal will be sent to Glenrock Blue for the custom satin hot blue.

Before I send the barreled action for bluing, I'll measure shank and order a Edge stock. Probably the pre 64 Monte Carlo pattern in brown w/tan specks and red pad.

Probably Talley steel mounts/rings and I'll send them for bluing as well.

I have a matte FX3 6x42 HD in the safe that will go on this rifle.

$500? Unless I'm very mistaken, the SH I bought some years back was more like $150-$200.

Now you have me wondering....

Hmmmmm. Me too. I just did a quick search. But I'm good with the original metal since I decided to send it off for bluing. New screws have been ordered as well.

Not really. I had a 338-08 for awhile and got rid of it. I have a 358 Win, so already have a stash of .358" bullets. I'm thinking Hornady 250 Gr PSP's.

Here's one close to what you are thinking.

35 Whelen, 1949 action, 23" #3 Shilen, 12" twist, McMillan Hunter's Edge.
7 lbs 11 ounces with 3.5-10 Leupy on top.

I'd pass on the McSuper Grade. I don't like the squarish forend feel.

I do like the McPre64 on a Pre64

For your 35W I'd be looking hard at another Compact.

I have the Sako Hunter on a Mk V 6lug and love it. I have a couple on order for M70 rigs.

Compacts:

I'd look hard at the sako hunter as well. I have one in edge fill on my M70 classic and I love it. It's a Lilja #3, 280AI crowned @ 23" from face of receiver. Fit and balance are perfect for me.

I've got two of the pre-64 Monte Carlo patterns, one Edge on a stock Fwt 270 and a standard fill on a custom 300 Win. The latter has a #3 Pacnor and is very well balanced, weighs around 8 lbs 10 oz with a 3.5-10 and steel Talley rings/bases. The former is around 7 1/4 lbs with a 2.5-8 in the same rings/bases. Both have stock Fwt bottom metal, which functions just fine and is surprisingly lightweight - I've got the numbers at home but can't remember them off the top of my head.

I've got one compact Edge stock, don't care to own any more of them. They feel like youth rifles to me.

Stick with the factory bottom metal, and send the parts to Lee. You'll be happy.

@ 257Heaven.

I'm doing something very similar to your proposed build.

Here's mine:

M70 classic s/s action (.30-06) made in S.C. (BACO)
McMillan Win New Hunter Edge - Green w/ black and tan speckles - 13.0" LOP
P/N #3 contour, 1:12" twist, 5-groove s/s bbl chambered to 35 Whelen (std chamber)
Leupy M8 4x33 scope
Mounts? (undecided)
Timney MOA trigger

I'm not too pleased with the Timney. It has a very flat trigger shoe that's much different that the ones on my M77 and M700. Have no idea why they did this. Your finger does not center itself in the cup of the tirgger shoe.

Mine won't be done until Feb or March 2015. We can compare builds then.

I like the 35 Whelen idea a lot. Or even AI the old Colonel.

As for stocks, the Pre-64 MC or Sako Hunter. The Sako Hunter is a fabulous stock IMO....

Per McM, the Win M70 New Hunter is patterned after the Sako Hunter and better accomodates the Win classic action. Monte Carlo cheeck pieces just work for me. YMMV.
